So Getting ready for new exhaust setup, my diagram inside

1139 Views 16 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  slw210
well in the next few months ill be free and clear from any future emissions testing on my vehicle :rockon and I thought i would get started on some diagrams for how I was thinking of doing the exhaust.

Everything will be welded and custom bent at a friends shop for wicked cheap :thumbup

currently I have a single exhaust with a flowmaster 40 from the cat to tailpipe with 3" pipe. I was thinking of keeping that and trying this..

Any and all criticism and remarks would be welcome

I was thinking No cats, 3" pipe from the Headman headers back to the flowmasters than again 3" pipe to an outlet behind the tires

or

Catco Highflows to keep the noise down somewhat and the rest is the same above just adding the cats.

But my question is, should I use a X or H pipe? And remember this is just a cheap quick diagram of what I was thinking..

If you are running long tube hedders i don't think there is a clean way to run the driver's side. My 84 it was run under the trans cross member and skidplate along the frame and then back under.
Well with short headers its possible but long tube it might not be possible? can anyone confirm this?
put cats on, do it for the enviorment

Ive always wanted to say that to someone. But if you do put cats on, do an X pipe so you only need one
Thats hillarious
ecspically since I gut mine, and always suggest cutting them off :histerica

Sounds strange Spiked

but I recommend you get a 12" piece of 3" pipe (even plastic ABS plumbing pipe if you have to) and lay under your driver's side and hold it up and envision the routing.

There "may" be a way to get it down the driver's side efficiently and with decent flow and few kinks and turns, but I've yet to see it.

Getting an X or H connection in, without serious ground clearance losses will be the real trick IMO

well i plan to have my 2.5"/4" lift in before that, so It shouldnt be a problem for ground clearance. I wanted pipes straight back on each side without resistance, but ill get under and see if its even possible.

but would you recommend an X or H pipe connection if theres no feasible way to get it down the drivers side? how would the layout look for dual exhaust
You can run them like that, but it will take some work to figure out your routing down the drivers side. IIRC, I was able to make slight bends up and over the cross members using long tubes on my 84 4X4 Pickup, but it is tight. An H-pipe will be better and much easier than an X-pipe on a Bronco with this setup.

You should really consider using shorties, a Y-pipe, a high-flow cat, good muffler and 3" Pipe out the stock location.

If you really want duals, you might also want to consider running the drivers side over next to the passengers side, running them into a small X-pipe, going into some high-flow cats then into your mufflers, then run the passengers side to the stock location and the drivers side back over and out on the drivers side.
I am running Pacesetter Long Tube Headers with no cats and a true dual setup with Flowmaster series 44's mufflers
I originally bought long tube headers and the pass side went on fine, but the driver side didn't. The headers hit the firewall and i couldn't bolt them on. But I have a 96 you have an 85...so i don't know, the clearance might be different.

Gackner has the only truly perfect dual set up

His both run down the passenger's side with staggered mufflers and dual s to the axle. He hasn't quite figured out what to do to get over the axle yet though.

Going with what slw210 suggests (shorties into a 3" Y-pipe, single three inch muffler and 3" mandrel bent tailpipes, I'll expand on that with another idea for you.

The guy who I patterned my own system after (he's here periodically) was WD-40 from the old BBS board.

He used the system slw210 is describing except he split out after his muffler and used dual tailpipes and who the heck would know they weren't duals all the way.

If you want that Mustang small block Ford sound that everyone craves there are other factors that would make one muffler sound killer.

Those are; different cam, higher flow (or no) cat;), better cylinder heads and of course any kind of header.

Back to the laying on your back with a length of pipe, digital camera and sketch pad with measuring tape.....try it. I got a lot of my brainstorms under there.

There are some things you cannot change under a Bronco; The path of the tailpipe, the location of the muffler, etc.

If you use the area where the tailpipe starts (before the axle) as cast in stone, then work forward, you'll realize just how short our Bronco's exhaust systems really are.

I need 3" header collector extension between my "one" cat (hollow now;):toothless) and my muffler and the tailpipe goes right into the back of my muffler.

Ain't NO WAY I could use that muffler with the stock two cats. Just not enough room.

Screw the neighbours and get under there and start a-thinkin':toothless and a-dreamin' and a-schemin'.

well i did find this

http://www.fullsizebronco.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10102

so it might be possible if i set it up like this no? The only thing I dont have to worry bout is cats taking up space.
look up gacknar's exhaust. i did the exact same setup only with duals exiting the sides before the rear tires. its the only truely dual setup that i've liked that flows really well and works with what we have under the truck as far as space goes that i found.

you can do the same setup only without cats if you dont want 'em. ironclad's is similar.
I will see if I can get mine up on a lift and take some good photos so you can see I ran it
My Bronco currently has 2 1/2" duals, drivers side crossing over and running down the passenger side into some turbo mufflers (I think Flowmaster 40s), then split and run out the back, no cats. It also has long (about 2') Magnaflow 4" or 5" tips.

It is way to loud for me, so I will be running a y-connector (dual 2 1/2" in 3" out) then a High-flow Cat into a Summit 3" center in dual 3" out muffler (I already have the muffler). Trying to decide on where to go after that. Originally planned on running them angled out to opposite rear corners, but now thinking of running them both out the same side, either before or after the passenger side tire. Which would be best?

By the way, I have not had any problems with exhaust coming in the rear window with the straight back duals, but just don't like the looks.

I will try to get some sound clips of what it sounds like, this weekend. You can decide for yourself if you like that sound.

You think I should keep the tips?
