Some EFI Performance Questions

Alright im going to take out the tired 302 and im planning on installing a large cubic in windsor (393,408). I know the whole deal on going from a 302 to a 351 as far as swaping the computer goes. What im wondering is how well will the speed density work with a 408. i know ill have to be very careful about cam selection, but will the speed density be adversly affected by the increase in cubic in. Will i be better off to just swap over to a mustang style mass air. Also how bad will the stock 351 intake choke down the 408. Also i have a 92 with an e4od

1. The stock 351 intake would choke a 289.

2. Stock S.D. will not run that engine.

3. What year and what tranny.
sorry, i edited the post. Its a 92 with an e40d
You could run it with a 93-95 Lightning S.D. computer if you had a chip burned for it or got a programer such as a twEECer.
Is the Lightning computer a direct swap. A buddy of mine has a mass air setup off of a 91 mustang. That should solve my SD problems, but what will i need to do about the E40D.

I am 99.372% sure it is. Just check to make sure the 60 pin connecter has the same pinouts as your computer. If any are diferant just swap them out so that they are in the right place for the new computer. It's that simple.

A hayns manual will have a wiring diagram that will show you pinouts. If it doesn't have one specificly for lightnings then you know you are golden

You would have to either run two computers or buy an aftermarket controller like the Baumannator TCS.

so what your saying is unless i want to spend a tremendous amount of money im stuck with SD. Also what about the lightnings i see running aroud with MAF

Some use A-9 computers and a controller, some use later Mass-Air/E4OD computers from a standard pickup like the VEX-1.

There are many ways to do it.
I thought the standard truck maf computers only came in the 302 firing order.
or am mistaken

I dont know, but I do know injector firing order is uninportant. But if you really wanted to wory about it you could switch the pins in the 60 pin connector to match.

Wait.....
Later 302s (even in trucks) had the H.O/351w firing order.
f.o. is not an issue as far as the ECM goes. The gen 1 L's were made from 93-95 so you have the same gen truck and the ecm is a direct swap. It was a direct swap into my 90 when I upgraded to a 351. You need to get an Edelbrock or GT-40 intake with a stroker. The E4OD will piss you off now that you're looking to stoke it. The E4OD is the only reason I didn't go with a 393 stroker when I built my 351. The only way you can keep your SD with that stroker is with a TwEECer or chip like Gak said. Bluebeast did it, he had a few programming issues at first but got it straightened out(with help from the owner of TwEECer). You either need a MAF setup for a 351/E4OD combo or the Mustang set up and a trans controller like a Baumanator. The way to go would be a 351/E4OD ECM, anything else will add several hundred more dollars to the build that won't give you any performance, juts necessary to run your combo. This has all been talked about in detail many times. Try a search and you should find a lot more info. Also try NLOC.net, you'll find more info there than you can imagine on this subject.
