I've not been inside the older front ends, but would be curious if the new parts could be made to fit/work in the older knuckles and on the older shafts.

I assume you're referring to this picture, which seems the only applicable one:



That is labeled "wheel seal". I'm referring to a seal that rides on the axle. Same thing? I can't find a more applicable picture in that album.

I've used the normal inner wheel bearing seal in the past without a problem.

Are you supposed to secure the black seal on the spindle or literally just butt it up against the hub to the other part of the seal??

Yes. I have a 96. I looked in the manual and it showed a special tool to install the rolling diaphragm seal.
