Starter Shims How Many

20584 Views 26 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  LION COUNTRY
I just replaced the starter on my 88 yesterday. Had a spinning whinny noise. Checked here yesterday and got the shim idea. Bought a shim. Same noise. More shims or replace starter. Flywheel is good.

If it has a warranty, exchange it for another.

I've never had to use a starter shim on any of my ford vehicles.
To the best of my knowledge, Ford doesn't use shims, at all for the starters. GM products, however, do.
they do make starter shims for fords.....usually by the 'help' section.
i would do like justin said.....exchange it for another.sounds like the bendix is screwed up on it.
i had to use a shim on a powermaster mini starter, would not engage the flexplate....after a shim, worked like a champ after that.
Is your motor plate puckered in around the starter hole?

I said no based on an answer by someone that knows a lot about fords in post 9, that and I've never seen a shim on any ford starter
Ive never had to use a shim on any of my trucks..... Id return it for a new one...
...and get the RIGHT starter for the application. ;)
I've had to use shims, or maybe call it a shim plate? It's in the HELP section of the parts store. I have no doubt that it has as much or more to do with other problems with the vehicles, but if a $3 part lets you get on the road then personally I'm going to use it.

as to ford never needing shims.........

TECHNICAL BULLETIN:
Ford Starter Shims
ALERT: FORD STARTER DRIVE FAILURES
APPLICATION: All Ford Inline 6 & V-8 Engines, 1963 thru 1991
PROBLEM: Ford starters come in (either a core or alleged defective)
with the clutch retaining cap on the drive cut off on the front side, or worn from running against the flywheel.

REASON: The engine flywheel is floating. The crankshaft thrust bearing that keeps the crankshaft centered wears after about 60,000 miles, allowing the whole crankshaft and flywheel assembly to move toward the front of the engine.
THIS IS NOT THE FAULT OF THE STARTER:
**REFER TO FIGURE 1 AND FIGURE 2 BELOW**

SOLUTION: Ford Motor Company has made a shim to correct this problem. The part number was D6TZ-11N004. It was .090 thick and fit between the starter nose housing and the bell housing. thus backing the starter away from the ring gear. Ford has discontinued this shim.

**THE SHIMS ARE NOW AVAILABLE THRU H. M. C.**

If possible always inspect the customers core to detect this problem in advance. You will save both, yourself and the customer a lot of time and money.

If the flywheel has gotten closer to the motor, why would you want the starter further from the motor? That dosn't make sense to me.
If the flywheel is closer to the engine means the starter can't disengage. shimming it pulls it out of mesh.

People that ride the clutch a lot get this problem .

wtf would that have to do with it?i had to shim a starter on an automatic, brand new starter, brand new 351w short block.i don't know why it works, but it does.:goodfinge

Riding the clutch pushes forward on the crank and eats up the thrust bearing . Having not enough free play will do it too.

If you have an auto a bad torque converter clutch will do it or just having a lot of horsepower and not using a converter with an anti ballooning plate.

Reving it up in park to 5000 or so and dumping it in gear is another way .:popc1:

 Odd that I've never run across that TSB on any Ford service disk, online, or on paper. :shrug And I notice that you neglected to post the Ford TSB number. :deal It's also odd that I've never run across any 4.9L/300ci with this shim installed, OR a starter damaged the way that article describes. :scratchhe
How does shimming the starter fix a bad thrust bearing :shrug :twak

It won't fix it but you can keep driving it until the noises start to drown out your radio :toothless

If you need to shim it it could just be the starter, but if you can eliminate that you should start to think about your thrust bearing. If I had an auto tranny the first thing I'd do is check to see if the tranny cooler is plugged.
Figured it out

Different Starters for Manual and Automatic Transmissions. Thanks AutoZone for the headache.
Never used or seen a shim used on a Ford V8. That said, I can see how a worn out thrust bearing surface could cause the crank to walk forward and cause a problem. A $3 shim is sure easier and cheaper than a bottom end rebuild.
If it gets you back on the road without stressing your wallet give it a try.

Blame yourself - you went there... :shrug

Next time, stay OUT of the zone! :smilie_slap
