My ignition went out about a year ago. Instead of paying the quoted $360 for a new ignition, I decided to install a starter switch. In this particular case, I could turn my key to ACC, then push the starter switch. That's the only way it will turn on.
Here's a parts and tools list:
1 Starter Switch
2 Lengths of wire
3 Wire connectors
1 Butt Connector
1 Drill/w bits
1 Flat head screwdriver
1 Torx screwdriver(not sure on the size)
1 Wire cutters
1 Wire crimpers
1 Wire strippers
5 Zip Ties
First off, go to an auto parts store and pick up a switch. I got the type that you push in to close the circut, and let go and it opens the circut. Grab some wire and your drill and get on your way.
Disconnect your battery!!! Very important!!
Pull the trim off so you can get access to the torx bit. When you remove the torx screw, you will be able to pull the dash panel away to gain access behind your soon to be new switch.
Here's a sideways view behind the panel. The yellow and purple wire is what is connected to the switch.
Drill a hole in your firewall if there isn't already one. Run your wire down the dash from the plug and through the new hole. I would wrap some electrical tape around the wire that is in contact with the new hole so that it doesnt slowly wear the wire through.
Run the wires from your firewall up to your solonoid. Clip the wire that attaches to the plug on the top of the solonoid and use a butt connector to attach your ground wire to it. Then attach your positive wire to the positive on the solonoid.
Connect your battery, put your key in, switch it to the start position, and depress that switch! If all goes well, it should fire right up! Good luck!
