Starter Switch installation

My ignition went out about a year ago. Instead of paying the quoted $360 for a new ignition, I decided to install a starter switch. In this particular case, I could turn my key to ACC, then push the starter switch. That's the only way it will turn on.

Here's a parts and tools list:

1 Starter Switch
2 Lengths of wire
3 Wire connectors
1 Butt Connector
1 Drill/w bits
1 Flat head screwdriver
1 Torx screwdriver(not sure on the size)
1 Wire cutters
1 Wire crimpers
1 Wire strippers
5 Zip Ties

First off, go to an auto parts store and pick up a switch. I got the type that you push in to close the circut, and let go and it opens the circut. Grab some wire and your drill and get on your way.

Disconnect your battery!!! Very important!!

Pull the trim off so you can get access to the torx bit. When you remove the torx screw, you will be able to pull the dash panel away to gain access behind your soon to be new switch.

Here's a sideways view behind the panel. The yellow and purple wire is what is connected to the switch.

Drill a hole in your firewall if there isn't already one. Run your wire down the dash from the plug and through the new hole. I would wrap some electrical tape around the wire that is in contact with the new hole so that it doesnt slowly wear the wire through.

Run the wires from your firewall up to your solonoid. Clip the wire that attaches to the plug on the top of the solonoid and use a butt connector to attach your ground wire to it. Then attach your positive wire to the positive on the solonoid.

Connect your battery, put your key in, switch it to the start position, and depress that switch! If all goes well, it should fire right up! Good luck!

This wasn't the most technical sounding article, but it was such a simple task I didn't feel the need to go in depth. If you have any questions, send me a PM :thumbup

got any pics of the switch you used? i think i know what you're talking about...but if you dont want to show it for security reasons, thats cool

good idea, If i may make a suggestion, i'd use a rubber grommet on that, it'll be a lil better than electric tape, wont wear out...and, i'll probably use the stock ones i normally go through in the area under the pedals, just push it into the grommet thats already there, works well

looks good, answers all my questions, i'll get this badboy going soon, thanks :thumbup
Here's the switch in the pic, it's nice and camoflouged and impossible to see in the dark. Most of my friends don't even notice in the daytime.

*Edit*
I did use a rubber grommet for the hole in the firewall, I just couldn't think of the word at the moment :toothless

That's pretty cool, I'll have to remember that for when my ignition goes out. Good write up, seems pretty straight forward.

i believe you'd just have to change a 20 dollar part or so, me and andy were discussing this last night, check out his post someone bumped, "no start"

im thinking he doesnt get what wire to tap into off the selenoid? :shrug
Either way, I like the switch. I wanted to install it anyway, the ignition breaking just gave me the kick in the butt to do it.

I'll post a closer pic when I get home of the wire to clip.
Good stuff my ignition just went out also. Cool rig.
