I have an '86 FSB and have been told that the steering column is shot. Would replacing the steering column ($500+) improve the on road handling of the truck? i.e. would a new steering column improve the amount of "play" that is currently in the steering wheel when I drive?
I realize this is a 25 year old bronco that's been lifted w/ mud tires, but would like to improve the handling of the truck if possible.

Usually "play" is caused by a bad tie rod, or tie rod end. If it is the steering column it def shouldn't $500. Get a JY one and diy, it's not hard.
