Stolen Car: What To Do After an Auto Theft

While vehicle theft is a very upsetting experience, GEICO is here to help you every step of the way. Below is a detailed guide on reporting a car theft and how to get back in the driver's seat.
Call the police as soon as possible.
If your vehicle has been stolen, you should contact the police immediately and file a stolen vehicle report. GEICO cannot honor a
claim for vehicle theft unless you first file a police report.
Report your claim online or by phone.
After contacting the police, you can
report the theft online or call GEICO at (800) 841-3000 to report the stolen vehicle as soon as possible. Our claims representatives are available 24-hours a day, 7 days a week to help you. If you do not have
comprehensive physical damage coverage, you should still notify us of any stolen vehicles immediately. Notifying GEICO of the vehicle theft could help protect you if the thief causes damage to others with your car.
A Few Things You'll Need
When you contact GEICO, have the following information available:
- Certificate of Title for the vehicle.
- Location of all keys to the vehicle before and after the theft.
- Names and contact information of everyone who had access to the vehicle.
- A description of your vehicle, including mileage, options, service records, and upgrades*—if you have receipts for any upgrades or maintenance, please have these available as well.
- A list of personal property stolen with your vehicle. Coverage for personal items varies from state to state, and your homeowners or renters insurance policy may provide additional coverage for personal items that were stolen.
- Please include any finance or leasing company contact information and your account number, if applicable.
A Few Other Important Things To Do
If the stolen vehicle is
financed or
leased, report the theft to your finance or leasing company. To expedite your claim's process, inform your finance or leasing company to discuss the case directly with GEICO.
When you file your claim, you should receive a
Vehicle Theft Questionnaire. Complete and return the form to your claims examiner as soon as possible.
GEICO may also be able to provide you with a rental vehicle. Contact your claims examiner for more information.
Has your vehicle been recovered?
If the police recover your vehicle, make sure to notify your GEICO claims examiner immediately. This will help in quickly resolving your claim. For additional information about vehicle theft, go to the
