So when I start my truck sometimes the tach will jump to about 2000 rpm and the check engine light will come on. Then after a moment or so it calms down. What could this be?

Sounds like it has something to do with the TPS or the Throttle body is sticking open. But, since the CEL is lite, your bound to have codes, pull them.

OBD-1 code readers are like $25 at any auto parts store. Even if you never fix a problem on the truck yourself, it's worth the money to know going into a repair shop where your problem lies, so you don't get ripped off.
