I have this taillight idea, Im sick up busting new taillight lenses on the rocks. Im to the point of hammering out the sheetmetal to make the new ones fit in there each time. So my idea is simple. fill in the taillight holes with sheet metal sorta like you would do when shaving shit off a vehicle. Im looking for the filler panals without much luck:banghead anyone know a good source for them? however instead of welding them in and filling it in with body filler I want to make them removable thus replaceable when they get hammered bad. I will paint them white to match the truck and will make them bolt to the stock taillight holes so it would come out just like a taillight would. of couse I still need taillights so I want to run an oval LED light on each side. by doing this I will prevent the rocks hitting the light and busting them. problem is Im not sure how it would look or if its a retarded idea. thats where the photoshop gurus come into play.

make this

fit here

here is a link to the fullsize picture if needed

75 style meets 95 style. It's got that old school look. ;)

Is that legal though? I know a lot of guy's customize without that consideration, so it's probably not a big deal, but the corner lights serve as both taillights and side marker lights. Your redesign eliminates the "side marker" function.

i would bet that you would be able to fab something up using 70's era sheermetal. i would see if you could find a yard and cut out the entire light section.

i have been working on doing that very similarily to what yer thinking, except i havent given any consideration to having them being removable.
i though about having access from the rear instead, since i already gutted the rear interior of the bko.
i have been tinkering with some 16 gauge sheet metal and an old tailight that i have, getting the contours similar. i was then going to weld it in like a patch panel and insert an led type of light.

sweet idea you got there bro. you'll figure it out.
bustin tailights sucks.

.
I think it would be easier to start from scratch and bend my own sheet metal. I know the filler plates are out there, just gotta find them

yeah sorta, i beleive the lights need to be smaller, seems like the proportioning is wrong. i can get differnt sizes too.

yeah its probably not "technically" legal but I dont think it would be that big of a deal. I see tons of crap running around here that dont have side markers, ie custom trucks with everything shaved and leds in the tailgate etc. not to mention I run round with busted ass taillights for like a month after I break them. If it was in california it might be a problem, but here in AZ the dot rules are pretty light.

Plus if you have them where you can remove them an put the reguler ones back on I dont see a problem? I mean if you do get pulled over you might get away with........... Oh, I use them for offroading only so I dont bust the reguler ones, I guess I forgot to change them, I have the reguler one right here.

Just make sure you keep them with you:thumbup

EDIT: Older Chevy trucks have them like that, try a junk yard

OX has LED's for tailights now. couldnt find a picture of his mounted tho. I am thinking of bobbing the '82 and using LED's, but wasnt sure what I was going to do about the corner lights. I like the tailgate idea.

I chopped the sheet metal after the internal post (mini-bob). I'm going exo, so I don't think they will get trashed in this spot.
