I did a torque converter replacement on the e40d in my 93 about 3 months ago. Got the converter (heavy duty) from a local shop at my uncle's discount for $170. Also got the Filter and gasket for another $19. The shop said regular price for heavy duty is around $300 but a stock replacement was about $180. Bought my 17 quarts of MERCON V at napa (2.50 per) and went to work on it. All in all for the converter, fluid, filter, gasket and pizza/beer for the two friends that helped was $250. should be around the same for you with a stock replacement converter and BTW mine was showing the same symptoms and it definately solved the problem. Hope this helped.

P.S. unless you have a REALLY good transmission jack i would recommend taking the t-case off for the pull. That damn tranny is heavy enough without it.
