My exhaust is cracked in multiple spots and a few brackets have actually broken so i have decided to look into getting it redone. I have been looking into new headers, so if anyone has opinions on long tube or shorty headers that would be appreciated. I really like the look of a dual exhaust so id like to keep it that way. I was also thinking about having it shoot out right in front of the back tires. I was thinking about a no muffler straight pipe also. I have also heard that H pipes or X pipes are needed but haven't actually heard much about them, this truck will soon not be my daily driver so a really loud truck wont be a problem. I'm just looking for suggestions, ideas, tips, maybe some good exhaust shops near Knoxville Tennessee, and some videos of your exhausts if inclined. Thanks for all responses in advance.
I have true duals on my 351W truck, w/ glasspacks. they dump behind wheels both sides.
and my 513 big block stroker is true duals striaght 3" pipes. they dump behind the rear axles.
it is ok on the 513 truck honestly, isn't even horribly loud/annoying.
the 351W truck, which is my DD, is down right horrible. especially since there is no OD so it is screaming at 3k RPM on the highway. Plan is to replace the exhaust with duals w/ X-pipe and have them dump in front of the rear wheel on passenger side, with a true muffler, something kind of quiet when cruising but gets loud enough when I hit the gas. that or I may install a solenoid operated dump to switch it to straight pipes when I want to do something stupid (could have this set so that it activates at 75% throttle or above, for example)
I removed the true duals that were on my 86 after my full length headers & went with custom made 2 1/2 Y-Pipe from the headers that went to 3" where the Y came together, then went 3" all the way out, exiting in the factory location.
Seat of the pants tells me it has better power than the true duals did, especially in the mid range acceleration, like normal driving in traffic... it's loud and deep, & sounds good, where as the true duals were loud and raspy, more like my 16 year old neighbors kid that cut his mufflers off.
there used to be a shop in Maryville that did exhaust on my 88 bronco and on my mustang. Broadway Muffler.. that was 20 yrs ago. Not sure if they are still around but worth looking in to. they did good work at a reasonable price. Joel
For duals, you really need a y-pipe, whether 2 into 1 or just 2 shaped like a Y, with an H-pipe.
Then a dual outlet muffler or pair of single out mufflers.
Factory cats are terrific mufflers. Aftermarket high flow cats are not.
Want loud? Borla XR1 muffler. Not quite as loud: Borla Pro Xs. Moderate: flowmaster deltaflow 50.
I run long tubes on my 300 inline 6, with custom 2.5" into 3" y-pipe, into a small magnaflow cat, into a Borla XR1, and out a single 3" tailpipe. Its loud and obnoxious.
With my 460, I started out with Sanderson block hugger headers which are 2.5" at the connection, so I got their 2.5 to 3" transition flanges, then 3" all the way back & through a pair of glasspacks and dumped behind the rear wheels. It sounded really good, but after a few months of the glass packs burning in I found it a bit too loud, but more so too "poppy", especially on down shifting the ZF5, like old dump truck jake brake poppy. So I swapped out and re-routed to a single muffler, dual in/out and dumped them both behind the rear right wheel. It's still kinda loud, but I don't hear it as much due to it being furthest from drivers seat. I don't think it has that big block rumble now, which I'd like to get back to, but it did give me more back pressure and improved power mid-range. Eventually I'll separate the dumps behind both wheels again, but it will be after the rear 4-link goes in so it doesn't interfere with that. Then I'll look into a good sounding muffler.
cut the old system off, and run new duals out the back exiting in front of back tire, or angled behind back tire each side, or under back bumper...truth be told, these look great with SIDEPIPES if you're old school daring enough to try them...just come off the manifolds, angle to the sides into sidepipes behind the front wheel, which will exit back in front of the back wheel. headers will make more power, but if you keep the truck long term you'll be putting a few sets on it, they rot out.
