This is a three part question.

My 81 Bronco with the 351M needs valve seals and at least an oil pump. Smoke on start up, and poor oil pressure after interstate driving.

I can get a complete used 351M with a no smoke/leak/knock for 30 day guarantee, if I come down and identify it.

The question(s):

Would it be worth it to put work in this possibly questionable engine, when I can get a warranted used one for 300 bucks? I figure I can then take my time and build a monster out of the one I remove.

If I go get the used one, how do I tell the difference between the 351s?

If I get the used one, should I do anything to it other than bolt it in?

If the one in the junkyard is 300 bucks, and you're wanting to tear it down to rebuild it, don't worry about it's warranty(because you'll void it as soon as you remove the intake), and 300 bucks is a fair price for a runner

don't ask... do it

Yep, 300 bucks for a warranted running engine. 150 for a rebuildable complete engine.

This local yard is pretty good, the people are nice, and they have a 30 day return policy on anything you get from them.
