VSS Confusion

Im a little confused about whetever or not i need a VSS sensor....

I have an 85 bronco(mostly) It has a cable driven speedometer, with a VSS sensor(i think) built into it right before the firewall for the cruise control module i believe. Will this VSS work for the Ford EEC-IV swap i plan on doin? I know for a fact the sensor works, and i also have a spare in case it goes bad.

Im not goin to use the cruise control ever. Actually im removing all the related parts. I know some guys are saying you don't need a vss on older EFI trucks. But just be sure, if this one will work ill just use it.

Plus i want to run a 14b full float rear. Which don't have no hole for a vss.

If this VSS won't work, what other options do i have to allow me to run the 14b, and still have a functioning odometer/speedometer?

What computer are you wanting to run?

Yes the 92 up spedos are PSOM
But youll need a rear axle with a tone ring to run one.

So they won't work if you put the vss in the t-case whre the speedo cable went?

It will work for that computer and your existing speedo, but I belive the number of pulses per tire rotation would be diferant from an axle mounted VSS. This would make the PSOM be way off.

The way the early EFI trucks where the VSS was in the T-case with the spedo cable pluged into it. 87 up got an aditional RABS speed sensor in the axle and then later this become the VSS for the PSOM

Atleast thats the way I understand it.

Steve will know better than I what was done when.
ah, ok. So ill just find me a vss from an 85 0r 86 or so EFI truck and the speedo cable to match. Doesn't seem too difficult then lol. Wonder if advance has them new....

It can any of those years with a t-case mounted VSS. Carbed models with cruise had them also.

Pre~'85 used a cable-mounted VSS (6 pulses per cable rev) for cruise only.

~'85-91 used a t-case mounted VSS (6 pulses per cable rev) for cruise and E4OD shifting. The ABS sensor was only used for RABS. The ESOF t-case always had its own dedicated speed sensor in the tailhousing.

'92-96 use the ABS sensor (108 pulses per diff rev) in the rear axle (via the ABS module) to feed the PSOM, which then feeds everything else.

...does that mean i can't use a t-case mounted vss for my EFI?
It means...

B) The only thing the EEC needs a VSS for is to manage an electronic automatic, like an E4OD or 4R70W, so: no, you don't need it.
That's still my advice.
