I have an aluminum water pump on my 351.

It is a standard rotation water pump.

Had to do some work on my cooling system and am replacing the water pump gaskets.

I need the backing plate to pump gasket.

The parts stores keep giving me the gasket for a steel water pump.

I don't remember what application i got the water pump for.

Is it a police car/ or heavy duty option???

What the heck, I had to trim and add to a 86-up water pump gasket.
which I did not like.

Steel/aluminum, what's the difference? They both bolt to the same motor, right? Am I missing something here?

Ok, first of all.

Yes they both bolt on, but the accessories do not swap exactly.

You can physiclly bolt an 93 water pump to your 83 timing cover but the cooling passges do not line up and coolant leaks by the gallon.

Most carbed engines have the steel casing water pump, along with the v belt pullies and such.

the efi engines have the aluminum water pump and serp. system.

Yes they all have a backing plate, but the cast steel is a lot bigger and different sized, so therefore not interchangable.

I went to a serp. system from an early model LTD 79-82 or the mercury equivalent.

It had an aluminum water pump. which is the same that I have on my bronco now, but when i went ot order gaskets the parts places could find the aluminum water pump, but not the replacement gaskets.
