im looking to buy a 79 full size bronco, it has a 351 with a 4 spd, 4 in skyjacker lift, 36in tsl's, new exhaust, it needs new interior, and body work, it has a rusted through spot about 4inx4in and the floor pans are rotted through in some spots, it has a 9in rear end, the part that worrys me is that it wont stay in 3rd gear if you are coasting. does anyone know why, and how much to fix. they guy is asking 3gs but i would not give him more than 2, what can you tell me about it, and if anyone knows the problem with the tranny can you tell me how bad it is to fix,
any info would be appreciated.
thanks

Just me but i am not sure if i would give him $1,000 for it just from the sounds of it, but how does the engine run? I only paid $400 for mine bone stock with a decent interior, no rust on interior, little bit of body rust, and totally stock. But that is just my opinion, post some pics maybe

Really now that is a rip off i think.Dont wast your $$ on that. It doesnt matter if your just going to use it to wheel in or what ever,Thats just to much $$$$$$.So he put $200 to $300 in exhaust..... does that justify everything else thats wrong with it?? in my opinion Not.

I paid $1650 for mine with a 6 inch lift, good 35" mud terrains, american racing wheels, new cat., and an almost rust-free body. It has a cracked/ruined driver-side exhaust manifold, leaking 3rd member seal in the rear end, needs new rear brakes, and has some serious steering slop. It will run and drive fine as is, but it will need some attention sooner or later.

I would find the Blue Book value for the Bronco, and subtract (at least) $600 for transmission repairs, and about $500 for the rust. Make sure to show the owner the blue book value and cost for repairs, it will make him more likely to agree with the lower price.

The tranny bumping itself out of 3rd means that a) most likely a BW T-18
b) lot of wear in the thrust washers/bearings allowing the gear cluster to move forward and back.

Very common rpoblem and does not hurt a thing to drive like that for another 100K miles. It is a nuisance though...and will run you easily $600 or more to have fixed properly unless you can remove, rebuild and replace yrself.

That's a 1000-1200 dollar rig maximum. My .02
