I've been trying to figure out what type of transmission I have through searches and stuff, but haven't come up with anything. It sounds like an E4OD, but everyone that mentions they have one, has a 90's Bronco. What years did they use E4ODs?

I have a 1981 4 speed with overdrive. It has the push down and to the left reverse.

I don't have a picture of it, but here's a diagram of the shifter knob.

---------------------

|`P``````1```3````|
|`U```___|___|````|
|`S```|``|```|````|
|`H```R``2```OD``|
|`````````````````|
---------------------

Also, how reliable and durable is this transmission?

What Gack said. Look at the trans code on your door sticker, then search and you'll find it.

Looks like it's an aluminum SROD. Never had any problems with it and it's 25 years old and still going, so I guess it's alright. What would be a better transmission to put into it though? (Thinking about a ZF, but I imagine I'd have to convert a bunch of stuff.) I do alot more of just camping than blasting through mud and climbing over rocks, but I certainly don't want that aluminum transmission going out on me.

(I still want overdrive though, I do a lot of long distance driving and don't feel like giving up my 20mpg.)

a bronco that gets 20 mpg???? stock
Beauty of a 300. If you drive them gently, they don't use a whole lot of gas. Last tank I got 16.7 mpg IN TOWN.

No, I didn't see a trannies stickie page. I found it on the internet. No need to be degrading.

Its been a sticky for several months. I helped compile some of the info... especially the SROD and NP-435, and the swap from bad (SROD) to better (NP-435) Which is bolt on except for one thing you gotta drill.

And I was the one being degraded since I helped put all that info together and its the top sticky in the general repair section, so its no that hard to find:wacko

Reverse is left and up actually... not that it really matters. Just to help out if it's going to a sticky.

Right, not sure why I put it down.

I didn't mean any offense by not finding it, I just didn't think to look in the repair section because I wasn't repairing anything.
