[Ogeechee 4x4]

I'm looking at AutoZone.com at starters for a 351W. Being the thrifty person I am, what's the difference in the late 80's starters vs. the 92-96 starters, other than the pre-91 models are $90 cheaper?

The flywheels are the same part number across the years. Is it the wiring or something?

hhhmmmm bolt position? maybe its higher torque idk, there not wired diff b/c they all use the piggyback soleniod and the fender mounted, im not too sure what the diff could be

the starter needs the soleniod to disengage the flywheel or are you refering to the fender mount??....either way the pre 92 does have the fender mounted soleniod

well im not tryin to argue but it needs the piggy back to engage and disengage the flywheel, the piggy back throws out the bendix to engage the flywheel

Easy, the pre '92s have the starter solenoid up on the fender to send power to the starter. '92+ have the solenoid mounted on the starter itself. The '92+ fender mounted solenoid is for the power distro box.

The 91- starters do not have a solenoid on the starter,they use an internal winding and a plate to engage the starter drive,the power for engaging the starter comes from the fender mounted RELAY(it is not a solenoid).The 92+ starters have a starter mounted solenoid to engage the starter drive and provide power to the starter from the battery.

i dont beleive they are unless you get aftermarket, atleast mines not and its a 92 same with both my 95 F150`s all have E4od or 4r70w`s and 5.0`s

I believe they are stock. My starter is awefully small, just like the aftermarket ones. Very powerful though, and is still going strong after 13 years. The old ones without gear reduction are massive, and heavy.

you are correct, i dont think ill ever get an aftermarket starter, i just never have any probs with mine
