So I noticed an oil spot under the rear diff yesterday. I figure the seal is just broke cause it's old anyway. Today I went to the parts store cause I needed to change my gear oil anyway. Well I crawl under to drain the diff and see this:shocked :shocked

So what the hell happened? I should note that there is no noise from the rear end. I drives just fine aside from leaking oil from the hole in the diff. Tomorrow I will open it up to see whats going on inside. Is there anyway the ring could have hit it? All the damage is from the inside out and it just started leaking so whatever happened it was not long ago.

Wow, looks like your gear exploded. How can your truck even drive? Shit, when my rear end lost a couple of teeth, it made a loud band and followed up with a clicking noise.

You might have just lost a ring gear bolt....If only one bolt came out, it could do that, but otherwise it would drive ok....something to look at.

oh right where I left it. And some of the damage it did.

The diff cover took all of the damage. For now I just welded the hole up. I got lucky that the bolt got stuck where it did. On a good note I found out that I have 4.10 gears and not the stockers that I thought. 41 teeth on the ring and 10 on pinion is 4.10 right? It's stamped fd88 410 too.

Thanks guys. The 4.10s were put in by one of the PO's. It's etched 2/24/00 so I guess that is when they were put in. But yeah I got lucky, I think I will roll up a stake and go to vegas!:chili: :chili:

What looked like some bad luck turned out to be good. I would check the torque on the rest of them bolts while you're in there.

Looks like what happend in my 84 stepside several years ago. Turned a corner and heard a "Ting" drove ot the house and looked. Same kind of hole just lower in the cover. Chipped a ring gear tooth and threw it through the cover.
