I've been planing on getting a set until a friend told me a story about snaping 2 camshafts after backfires. how much of a risk are these?

40 years experience, and that's the first time I ever heard of that.

I think I want some documentation/verification, before I'll believe it.

you have to choose one specific model to do a pro/con comparo with
I do not like the Pete Jackson style that much but a single idler version would be cool

basically you get a cam drive that lasts longer then a few rebuilds
if you get one that has the gears lapped there isnt much added noise

I just put a Pete Jackson in my 460.

My timing chain was less than 2 years old and stretched way out. I've heard lots bad about gear drives, but of the few I've owned never had any problems. As with any aftermarket parts, good installation is critical to good operation. I've had a couple PJ's and they work great. I had a Milodon on a 440 Dodge and it was more af an HP unit that required some drilling and tapping into the block to mount the idler. If you want perfect cam timing and don't mind some noise and expense it's a good way to go.
