Hey guys, anyone know where the best spot to get a replacement tailgate is? Really I just need the outer shell. I can transfer everything else over from my gate. I saw the one on car parts .com. Is there another one that is better? Does some one have a good one somewhere near Illinois? Mines just a bit rusty and leaks just a bit. Lol

Dennis carpenter site has them. Factory tooling I believe. Spendy I recall.

I got lucky and found one in a wrecking yard in near perfect shape 2? Years ago.
Check with bronco grave yard and LMC. Hope that helps.

I got one from LMC just make sure you get the correct year they look the same on the outside but the latches changed after 82, so you want an 83-96 we’re the same.
Also They sell a patch kit for around 50 dollars that replaces the lower half of the tailgate skin. If the “floor” of your tailgate is good then that’s an option.
Finally you’ll need some new torsion bar brackets because yours are likely rusted and you don’t want those to break on you.

Yo Raser,
Swapping (t'gate differences between the years); "...Amazingly throughout the number of body style changes from 78 through 96, the tailgate remained nearly the same. You can swap tailgates between all of these years taking note of the following: I've broken down the 3 major changes into their respective years:
78-79 Type A;
80-82 Type B;
83-96 Type C;
If your swapping within the same type it's just a direct swap. If swapping A & B you have to switch the glass and glass support brackets; If swapping B & C you have to switch latches and striker plates; If swapping A & C you have to switch the glass, glass support brackets, latches & striker plates..."

Ask suppliers or local body shops for their source.

according to The Certified Automotive Parts Association (CAPA). CAPA was established in the public interest in 1987 to set up and oversee a testing program to assure the suitability and quality of automotive replacement parts. Independent, unbiased, non-profit, fully transparent and with no vested interest in the outcome, CAPA has since become the auto industry’s recognized authority on the quality and safety of parts used for collision repairs.

Our comprehensive testing program is a valuable public service that provides consumers, auto body shops, parts distributors and insurance adjusters with the reliable, objective means they need to identify quality replacement parts. Parts that will fit, perform, last and be every bit as safe as the originals. CAPA Certification is even recognized by government regulators as an assurance of quality.

What makes CAPA stand out from the rest is the fact that we have no vested interest in the sale of these parts or in selling of certification services. The public interest is what is at the core of the CAPA program.

To date, over 128 million replacement parts have earned CAPA Certification by meeting or exceeding CAPA’s stringent quality standards, making it one of the most widely respected quality assurance programs ever. That’s the good news. The bad news: There are millions of untested, problematic parts in the marketplace. To be sure you have a genuine CAPA Certified replacement part look for the distinctive yellow and blue CAPA Quality Seal that comes on every CAPA Certified part.

The CAPA Quality Seal appears only on replacement parts that meet or exceed CAPA Standards. It provides independent, objective assurance of product quality.

If there is no seal on the part, it is not CAPA Certified, regardless of what the seller says.

Shops — If it’s not on the part don’t even start

Got my shell from LMC - I put 3 dents in it switching everything over. Material is thin. So i would not suggest LMC.
Mine from LMC was CAPA certified so not sure if any of the others will be any better. I think anything you buy today is going to be thinner metal, regardless of the part, that’s why it’s best to find or repair your original if possible, but that’s not always cheap or easy.

Dennis carpenter. Pay the extra for it once and it'll be worth it over picking the LMC tailgate.

You can take a look at Pick-n-Pull and see if you can find something that will work. There's one in St. Louis and a couple up near Chicago.

Unfortunately both options are about a 3 hour drive one way for me. I'm in the dead center of Illinois(Champaign). I don't know what it is about Illinois and not having any junk yards. There's two right down by St Louis. And the others are in chi town. Nothing any where else. Every other state I've lived in, there's always been at least a junkyard within an hours drive. In Missouri Theyre everywhere. Any one know what gives?

I got mine (CAPA) off of EBay via carparts.com
Everything is sold out or on back order right now, but for $330, the quality was amazing. Everything I had, switched right over, but I would suggest replacing the power window motor while you’re in there. It will come in black primer, but everything is exact. I also use Jeff’s Bronco Graveyard, but check inventory with a pc, not a cell phone. The cell will show in accurate stock and availability. Great guys, though,( if you email or call). They’re always ready to help. Same with LMC.
Good luck!

Yo Raser13,
Tailgate Internals Swap by Dustin S @ Tailgate Replacement
He includes safety issues such as;
"The next step is to remove the bracket holding the torsion bar to the body. Take extreme care here as the bar packs a lot of force. I recommend trying to remove the bracket while the tailgate is as closed as possible to relieve pressure on the bar. I was foolish enough to do it with the tailgate down. Both bolts broke off allowing the bar to snap back and sent the bracket off to never-never land. I was never able to find the bracket so I had to get another one."
&
"

If your regulator is still in good shape, you should prevent the arms from moving before taking out the motor. I used a bolt and a bracket I found around the garage to secure the arms from snapping together."

Ebay LMC Gordon auto body supply makes them. Not sure what one DC sells?? Paint the tailgate before assembly. The E-coat is not made to last more than a few days outside.

You can get brand new shells from broncograveyard.com. Otherwise, a junkyard may have one
