Well, those wheels with more than stock backspace will sit farther inside the fenders. With this set of spacer/adapters, it will bring it back outboard to cancel that backspace. Found this thread too.

Wheel backspace questions!
I know it has been covered on lots of threads here and there. But I am planning on going with a BDS stage 2 lift with their replacement radius arms. I see everywhere that 3.5" bs is ideal on these trucks if your running a 6" lift with 35s. Where does this leave the wheels on say a 17x8.5 or so...

I don’t think the wheel bore will clear your hub extension. I haven’t seen many 5x5 wheels that look big enough. May want to confirm on manufacturer’s website before committing.
Most 17” wheels seem to have little negative offset. I want to run a 17” but want an offset greater than -20 mm. They can be tough to find.

I would need to find the diameter of the bore hole? Looked around in their site and didn’t see it.

Yeah, usually rims sized for Chevies (5x5) will have a smaller hub center bore. Fords are usually the biggest if I remember correctly. I have, for example, put newer 5 lug factory Dodge rims on one of my trucks before since Dodge uses/used that same lug pattern as Ford on their 1500's, but their center bore is way too small to clear the Ford hubs.
Not sure if it applies to all rims, but from most/every aftermarket rim I've ever seen with a 5 x5.5 lug pattern they always have a huge center bore so they'll clear both Ford and Dodge hubs. If you look at one of my rims that I have on my Bronco you can see the center bore goes basically from the edge of each lug nut. They are huge bores.

Backspace and offset are only partially related. Backspace is the distance from wheel mounting surface, to the back edge of the wheel. Offset is how far the wheel mounting surface is from centerline of the wheel. So a 9" wide wheel with 4.5" of backspace will have a 0 offset. But a 10" wheel with 4.5" of backspace will have a -13mm offset. Same ten inch wheel with 6" of backspace would have a positive 25mm of offset.
@JoelS Im running 17” on a Jeep and I’m waiting on a craigslist 15” set. I’d stick with 15” on a Bronco and go with a period correct wheel. I’m assuming your son wants the 17s?
BTW I have a set (4) 1- 1/2” spacers like posted for a Jeep. If it fits a Ford, you can have them if you find yourself in Miami area
