Well, tax time is coming up and I'm looking to spend some of my tax return on some minor upgrades to my Bronco. (no name yet). I was wondering what sort of good ideas I can keep an eye out for in the junkyard.

So far, I've got my eye out for a new center console and a roof rack, but I'm open to other ideas as well. I've got some decent yards around here to look through, so any ideas would be welcome.

And while I'm personally looking for the simpler upgrades at the moment, I'm sure other would be happy to see the more expensive and complicated upgrades you've found in a junkyard as well.

How about adding some anti-lock brakes to that bricknose. Scab the entire system off a explorer. You will have to upgrade your TTB to accept the wheel sensor, and rotor with a tone ring, rear end with a tone ring, or just get a transfer case mounted tone ring.

Im looking for an excursion/superduty steering column/wheel with radio controls.
Also some nice F250 or Expedition power seats.

i went barreling down a hillclimb backwards because i couldn't stop at the top with ABS. the damn pedal just vibrated no matter how hard i pressed it.. luckily it was a stick shift and i dropped the clutch to avoid hitting the trees at the bottom at 40+mph backwards.

another time i was coming down a sand wash, there was a fallen tree, i hit the brakes, but nothing happened. i went through the tree. i removed the ABS from that truck after that.

ABS is only for people who can't drive, panic, lock up their brakes and try to steer around the obstacle infront of them.

i know some people love ABS and think it stops better than non abs, safer, blh blh. not true. and i'm sure someone will flame me for my hating on ABS but i'd much rather not have it. just my opinion

/end abs rant.

as for junkyard upgrades.. look for a good set of locking hubs if you don't have them already. just remember to take the nuts and everything outward from the bearing.

Any idea of a good car brand that consume less oil? I'm planning to buy a Honda. Getting a great deal on Honda merely needs going to the right dealership. I ended up getting Honda because there are a lot of security benefits that have been added during the last few years.

Finally made it to the local "Pull-A-Part" and scored big time. At least, I think so.

I first ran into what appears to be a bracket for towing a truck behind another vehicle. (I litterally ran into it. My knee is still sore.) I think it would make a good base for a front hitch, or tow hookup.

I also managed to snag a set of tow loops off an Expedition. Not sure how I'm gonna mount them yet, but I just couldn't leave them. I may mount them to the "tow bar" I got as well.

I also snagged a dip-stick tube. The only thing I was actually needing to get. lol. The bracket on the one I've got now rusted off at the tube, so it tends to pull out when I check the oil.

And finally, grabbed a set of roof bars off several Explorer's. I don't have quite everything for mounting them though. I couldn't pull a full set off, so instead, I had to idea to pull only the front bars, since the back have this ugly little switch that lets them slide along the rails, and use only the solid mounting brackets. I could only get the front foot off three rails though. I only need one more rail to complete the set. A little paint and I should be good to go.

Nice find. :thumbup Did you get the "Dogbones", the factory nut assembly for those tow loops? That gives you sort of a plate between the mounting nuts. I didn't, & should beef up the plate work inside the frame. 91 should be the last year before the accordion frame horns, so mounting should be pretty straightforward.

If you have removed the front anti sway bar brackets from your Bronco, there is probably room to mount them directly to the frame with no trimming. When I added mine I hadn't yet decided if the sway bar was going to stay off. I trimmed notches in the bottom of the bumper, so the loops could mount to the frame & leave room for the existing brackets. There was one existing hole forward of those brackets. If I had it to do over I'd remove the bracket & see if the existing holes would line up with the expy loops, since the sway bar never went back on.

But so did the truck the tow bar frame came off of, so its built around that anyways. That should make it a good, solid mount.

Gotcha. I thought that came with the body redesign in 92. My mistake. :brownbag Have you seen Frogmann's write-up on his thru the bumper install? He shows it as 92-96, but if your frame horns are the newer style, I wonder if it might be another option for a 91.

Its possible that my bronco was made late in the year and the factory went ahead and made the swap to the acordian frame. Its been known to happen for other changes and mods between years.

Went back to PAP's today and got that core support I spotted yesterday. Came out nice. A little surface rust, but some sandpaper and a little paint can take care of that. Also picked up a couple of mirrors off an old Chevy. At least, I assume they came with the chevy. There were sitting on the hood. And found the last bracket I needed to make my roof rail idea work. I'm gonna have so much fun next weekend putting all this together. :twotu:

Oh, and that bottom one I spotted just as it is. Someone went through all that trouble of pulling the front axles and just left them there. Too bad I already had a full load. :cry If anybody would like to pick them up, I'd be happy to tell you where.

heh extended radius arms..probably a drop bracket still attached to the truck. no coils sitting around? I always hate hunting for already pulled parts. Idk if the part is gone or if someone shoved it into the back of the van 4 vehicles down.

I gotta call :bs on that one. :shrug Got pics of the build date on the VC label in the door jamb, the date stamped on the core support, the frame horns, and the SN stamped into the frame? Pics along at least one frame rail showing no splices would be good, too.

If you decide to post those pics, start another thread for it in this forum. I'm really curious to see a '91 accordion frame.
