Your Junkyard Finds!

Well, tax time is coming up and I'm looking to spend some of my tax return on some minor upgrades to my Bronco. (no name yet). I was wondering what sort of good ideas I can keep an eye out for in the junkyard.

So far, I've got my eye out for a new center console and a roof rack, but I'm open to other ideas as well. I've got some decent yards around here to look through, so any ideas would be welcome.

And while I'm personally looking for the simpler upgrades at the moment, I'm sure other would be happy to see the more expensive and complicated upgrades you've found in a junkyard as well.

Junkyards in CA have to be paved, that’s the reason a couple of them closed down. Yeah, I’ve got a dedicated set of clothes and shoes for the junkyard
Pick n pull yards up here in central and northern Cali are all crushed rock/gravel and most fluids are drained from engine, trans, diffs, fuel tanks etc prior to hitting the yard. It sucks because they poke holes in any pans etc that do not come with factory drain plugs. I still have a fuel tank to fix from a hole being poked in it :/

That's odd. I've been to several in SoCal that are just dirt. Anaheim is paved & I think Santa Fe Springs might be paved, but the rest I've been to are dirt.

Only one of the 6 u pulls in KC is paved, and its on a hill so everything runs down to the corner with the big trucks lol. And when i say paved, i mean it looks like whenever the local concrete company has an abundance, they bring it and dump it and smooth it out with a bobcat. It is ROUGH!

My favorite yard is not paved. A couple years ago they had something come in that just stank to the high heavens. Like rancid meat and burnt gear oil. Took over a year for it to dissipate. And of course it was in the ford truck section... Its been over a year and i can still picture the smell. Excuse me while i go throw up... Lol

I found a few interesting new trucks at my usual yard today.
97 F350 utility truck,
Bricknose F350 tow truck,
F-Superduty tow truck
the 97 F350 has a speed density 5.8 and has a 130A 3G.
I might be interested in getting the hydroboost master off the F-Superduty.

I love the big trucks!

Pedals and HB from the F-SD would sell fast. And the HB unit is super easy to remove. And they usually only charge for the MC because the HB unit doesnt have a traditional looking booster shape. Pirate Jack has the rebuild kits. Plus the MC will be a 1.3125" bore with the massive reservoir. If i didnt already have a pedal set for my 96 zf5 swap from you, id be interested in the pedals. @Burntoutaccountant might want them though for his 96 HB/ZF5 swap.

Also consider pulling the power steering pump since it is the dual return style for the HB. Though its still just a ford CII pump.

Also look for PTOs on the transmission and TC.

Also, the 97 with SD351 might have a smog pump eliminator on it. My 96 F350 has the SD351 still too, and had a C6!
also, in that second pic, is that an AC bypass pulley!? That might be worth a little coin too. Ive never seen one

The F-Superduty is a manual trans. Thats the one you need. Only ones i seem to find are bricknose.

The '97 should have the handy passenger side rubber cover under the cowl, to help keep debris away from the blower box. I've yet to find one myself.

Tell me more... This is not something ive heard of. 97 F-Series come in every once and a while.

The 97 E4OD dip stick and tubes are worth grabbing , they are longer than earlier years so you can actually check the trans fluid without crawling into the engine bay

I bet econolines have a similar dipstick tube too. Everything is extended in those.

The van dipstick came all the way up to where the egr mounts lol, I tried one but didn’t like it. I lucked out and grabbed one off a 97, works really well

Below the cowl, on either end (in front of the A-pillars), there's a fairly large, oddly shaped opening facing up. The driver's side has a rubber thing that clips in to block it off from debris. The passenger side is the inverse shape and has no cover. You can sort of put a driver's side one in upside down, but it doesn't really stay put. '96-97 trucks are supposedly the only ones that got the passenger side cover.

I got the AC bypass pulley and bracket. Only because the pulley itself is steel. I’ve seen them before with plastic pulleys. Looks to be the same steel pulley as the smog bypass on 96 OBD2 351s.

aftermarket...usually on f150s.
I got down to Anaheim PAP this week. They were still organized so the trucks, vans, & SUVs were grouped together. Hopefully sun valley goes back to that.

Anaheim is a nasty yard. It's all paved, so any oil just collects on top. You walk thru & your boots get coated with oil. Drippy oil. Forget using those shoes for anything nice. I had worn out my old JY pair, so my daily work boots got demoted. No way to ever get those clean enough to wear those into a customer's house again. New work boots bought the next day.

Here's my usual JY setup.
View attachment 212763

Going in: Bucket to carry tools. Easy to inspect. Hand truck to carry bucket. Cheap moving blanket so I don't have to lay in the crud. Bungee cords to hold it all together.

Coming out: Bucket to hold little parts & my tools. Moving blanket unless it's too nasty to go in the wash. Bucket to hold the bottom of long parts. Hand truck to carry large parts, with bucket on top if needed. Bungee cords to hold long parts standing up in bucket & anything else that needs to hold still.

There was a new to the yard 78 F-250 that online had the racetrack trim.

By the time I got there all the straight stuff was gone. I got these 3 bent pieces.

Is the JY you are referring to a LKQ pick a part? If so how are the prices?
I went back yesterday to grab a few things and the wanted 108.00 for a power bucket seat and 38.00 for the lower dash piece for my 1995..WTF, I left both pieces there.
Also, they are not organizing the yard anymore.

Looks like they call it LKQ Pick Your Part. This pick is from their website & shows the logo.

They've always been awful proud of electric seats. I bought one for a T-bird in the 80s that was a crazy price. The cashier sounded like a game show announcer as he described all the features of my seat.

This time I paid $6 each for the 3 pieces of trim. I think they have a price list they follow, but have a lot of leeway as to what they charge. If I hit a top dollar jerk, I ditch my stuff somewhere & come back at another time, hoping to find someone else. Usually someone close to closing time gives better prices. The older (my age 😁) flirty lady at one yard always charges me lower prices.

At Anaheim there was a guy outside of the cashier window who called out prices to the guy inside. The guy inside wanted to charge more for that trim, but the outside guy told him no.

I also dress the part. Old stained clothes, sewn up tears, usually worn out looking boots. Dress like a working mechanic & I think you pay more. I think anyone who argues with them pays top dollar.

I've never been to the Sun Valley yard, but always thought it was bigger than most. It seems crazy to not organize the yard.

At their yards that I've been to (Monrovia, SFS, Anaheim, Ontario, Riverside, San Bernardino) I search online for the vehicle & find its row & space before I go. Once done with that vehicle, I wander the rows of similar stuff. So far they'e been organized by type.

I hope the others don't follow Sun Valley's plan. That sounds horrible.

Technically not my find but @BigBlue 94 scored a s5-47 that’s going in my truck. Apparently the thing was perfect inside but I had it rebuilt anyway because it was already apart. Junkyard score for sure.

That truck in the pic is in better shape than my 78 f150...
