Your Junkyard Finds!

Well, tax time is coming up and I'm looking to spend some of my tax return on some minor upgrades to my Bronco. (no name yet). I was wondering what sort of good ideas I can keep an eye out for in the junkyard.

So far, I've got my eye out for a new center console and a roof rack, but I'm open to other ideas as well. I've got some decent yards around here to look through, so any ideas would be welcome.

And while I'm personally looking for the simpler upgrades at the moment, I'm sure other would be happy to see the more expensive and complicated upgrades you've found in a junkyard as well.

That truck in the pic is in better shape than my 78 f150...
It might have been the day they took the pic. It was pretty picked over when I got to it 1 day later.

Usually they take the pic right when it comes into the yard.

Still, my poor 78 is rough!

Went back today and got a couple parts. Ended up with the hydroboost pedals, but not the unit itself. I already have one and it appears to be in better shape that the one on this truck. I also pulled a gray console/jump seat from that 97 F350. No rips in the cloth and it even has the ‘roll top’ cover for the drink holes.

Both the brick and aero tow trucks have the IDI diesel and dual battery trays present. I might grab one of those on a later trip.

Both are also ZF5s. The Fsuper has the parking brake on the tailhousing so it might be convertible to 4x4. Also, both have PTO hydraulic pumps, but they’re on the drivers side, and the pump is to the rear. If they were put on a 4x4, passenger side, I’m not sure you’d want the pump and hoses pointing towards the front.

There were no K20 8 lug axles to be found, just a bunch of 6 lugs.

Let me get those pedals. I’ll buy them if you want to sell.

Nice I've been wanting to try to replace my center console with one of those jump seats. It should give the benefits of a bench and a console. My local JY wanted $300 for it though, they said they wanted full price for all 3 seats whether I took one or all of them. Now I'm waiting to see if @BikerPepe` has a spare in about a year or so. What I really should figure out is if they fit between the 2nd gen captains chairs or if I truly need to swap the side seats too.

Where are you located? I have a spare.

Man a factory HB unit is an easy sell. And you were only 4 nuts, 2 fittings, and a clamp away!

The ZF with parking brake attached IS a 4x4 model. The parking brake attaches just like a transfer case would. But they are the diesel bellhousing and likely the narrow gearset with a mere 4.14 granny gear. I recently left one on a f Superduty myself.

The PTOs might be swappable from side to side but im not sure. And no, there wouldnt be room to point the pump forward. The one i have is off the driver side of a legit 4x4 460 model. Then the fact that the PTO would be set up for the narrow gearset so it wouldnt likely work on a SBF or BBF wide gearset.

Nice score on the center seat! After all these years, i have yet to find a good one

I was really just 2 brake lines away. Already took everything else loose before I decided to leave it. I’m very sure it’ll stay there until I go back

Actually, I might end up with 2. The one I have currently and the one recovered with Burntaccountant's full seat set I committed to buy when he can bring 'em through. Eventually, I plan to get back to the oem style or maybe a custom center console. Hell, I might even see if the lil' lady will hook me up with a tuffy console for xmas, b-day or some kind of gift thing. Bottom line for me is getting a damn cup holder that's deep and wide enough to hold a damn drink and take a corner without spilling. I hydrate too much, so I've almost always got a drink of some kind and the jump seat cup holders are super shallow.

He's in Helena, MT according to his profile info. If you hover your cursor over the American flag in a users info to the left of the post, you can see the location entered in the profile. This works for every user who has entered the info in their profile... but I use a PC, not a phone so YMMV.

For mobile users, click their user name and it will show.

I too always have a drink on hand. The meds im on plus smoking gives me serious dry mouth. And if you think the 92+ cupholders are bad, try a 78-86 console... Their drink holders are maybe 1" deep. More like change holders lol

Tuffy makes a rear cupholder for their consoles that would screw to the front of about any console. My only beef with the tuffy consoles is they get scorching hot in the summer sun. Like fry an egg hot. Or burn your leg hot.

Those pedals are a great score, you can get a HB unit easy enough but the pedals and rod are unicorns, the jump seat is another good score, did you get the seatbelts, I used to get 300-400.00 dollars for those seats on Ebay

Golden experience/knowledge right there. Appreciate the tip. That's a lot of cash to drop for something that might burn the little doggy paws or melt down stuff stored inside. Makes perfect sense but I hadn't even considered. One of the reasons I was considering that make would be secure pistol storage but I don't want my ammo stored in a tiny oven.

As for the constant drinks... Cottonmouth for life, yo! 🤪 🤣 😎

@BikerPepe` is correct. I'm in Helena. I was going to get one of his centers after he gets those seats. He's relatively close to me at ~5 hours and only a couple of states away.

For cupholders I've actually been really happy with this cheap plastic set I bought at O'reilly's. I put some magnets on the bottom to hold it still and other than the adjusters breaking so it's harder to resize the pockets, it's great. I can even put my big 40oz water bottle in there and drive around. Not everyone has as spartan of an interior as my rig though to allow for that placement.

Yeah, the pad doesnt get as hot but the entire lid isnt padded so lil puppy paws would burn. Maybe it wouldnt be as bad in the PNW, but once it hits 90 here, things start gettin toasty.

It also does get like an oven but not as hot as you would think after touching the metal surface. Ammo wont cook off in there. That takes a lot more heat.

Lol kottonmouth king!

Hey, fellers. I'm trolling the Marketplace and came across a couple pics of a yard sale that caught this Ford lovers eyes. Does this look like a genu-wine Cactus Smasher to you? It would clearly have had the spare tire portion added to it after the fact, but it looks verrrrry similar to the one I yanked out of the wrecking yard a couple years ago or so.

And here's the one I pulled out of the wrecking yard way back when.

I'd say it looks like one, but it could be something else. There are plenty of aftermarket ones that look similar but mount different for different trucks. Those usually seem to be chrome though. If it's close enough I'd say go try to pick it up.

I agree with this. The cup holders SUCK on both of these lol.

very true... BUT, they can both be easily wallowed out and replaced with a quality size holders, usually from boats.
