Your Junkyard Finds!

Well, tax time is coming up and I'm looking to spend some of my tax return on some minor upgrades to my Bronco. (no name yet). I was wondering what sort of good ideas I can keep an eye out for in the junkyard.

So far, I've got my eye out for a new center console and a roof rack, but I'm open to other ideas as well. I've got some decent yards around here to look through, so any ideas would be welcome.

And while I'm personally looking for the simpler upgrades at the moment, I'm sure other would be happy to see the more expensive and complicated upgrades you've found in a junkyard as well.

very true... BUT, they can both be easily wallowed out and replaced with a quality size holders, usually from boats.
Oh Shoot! Didn't know this!
It's been a long time since I've been to the junkyard, and a bit longer since I've found something of use... but today I finally get to post in this thread! Found this beautiful set of 40/20/40 cloth seats in a recently departed F150 the next town over, I was on the hunt for new seats but i didn't expect to find the exact ones I wanted, and in the right color.

There's a small tear there at the bottom, and a SLIGHT depression in the foam there, but it's 10000000x better than the seats they replaced. Not a bad score for $420! The Console portion is not pretty, needs a deep cleaning and replacement drink cover and cubby cover, but for the price and the otherwise good condition I'm not complaining.

I forgot to post this the other day. A few more random pics. A couple very straight bricknose bumpers, side by side. And a thoroughly rusted out K blazer.

Damn. I could use one of those, with the chrome peeling off of mine.

The ZF with parking brake attached IS a 4x4 model. The parking brake attaches just like a transfer case would. But they are the diesel bellhousing and likely the narrow gearset with a mere 4.14 granny gear. I recently left one on a f Superduty
I got to thinking. There’s a small block 4x4 ZF5 in an F250, but the tailhousing is broken. Why not take the 4x4 rear off of this IDI one and put it on the smallblock

So that’s what I started to do today. I was able to get the brake drum off, and removed the crossmember and all the bolts holding that tailhousing on. Unfortunately I didn’t have a dead blow hammer and I couldn’t pull it off, nor did I want to risk breaking it with my BFH, so I left it for next time. Hopefully some SOB with the same idea doesn’t screw me.

I did get the crossmember.

As long as its the same s5-42 or s5-47, it should work. Also, great thinking! Thats a true scrounger mentallity!

BTW, rear and front case halves can be bought from used parts sellers like Ventures and Torque King 4x4. They are hundreds of dollars, each.

Now you’ve got me worried a bit. I’m pretty sure the F250 with the broken rear is a -47 because of the heavy ribbing. I’m not sure about this F-Superduty. Were there changes in the bolt pattern at the rear that wouldn’t allow the swap? I always assumed the reinforced case and maybe some better internals were the only real differences.

I cant say for sure. They may mate up, they may not. Internals may have a bit different specs, leading to a different case half. If the F-superduty has an IDI, its not a s5-47. IDI was last used on early 94s and the S5-47 started in 95.

Regardless, the 4x4 rear case half is worth snagging. You could get at least 200 for it.

just get it anyway someone may need it and will pay up for it. You can do a JY test fit so they dont charge you extra.

zf5 tail shaft housing breaks are very common. Corrosion, bad trans or motor mounts, maybe u joints are the cause.

The bore depth for the shift shaft to slide in differs between the -42 and -47, as well as the shaft itself. There is a deep and shallow bore, on the -42 the deep one is in the front case half, the -47 it is in the rear. You can run a -42 front with a -47 rear, but not the other way around.
Also, changing the tail housing requires a complete disassembly of the trans, it doesn't just bolt on the back end.
for diesel: Just to add to this, only a big block gasser will work, the small block is a few inches longer.

I know you can swap ZF5 internals from case to case. Lot of guys in the IDI world swap the wide gear sets in for better ratios. 4x4 zfs go for pretty big money. I see them listed all the time for $1800 depending what you can get them for I would snag them both.

maybe its a California thing, everything is more expensive here. but the few I have seen on CL have been in the $1800-2000. It is rare to find a running truck in that price range anymore. If you do, it is beat to death.

Twas an 88 F250 with 351w and a ZF5, d44HD TTB, FF 10.25, a 99 chevy seat, open headers, and a big honkin cattle pusher. Eventually it will become a full on crawler, bobbed, dovetailed, SAS'd, exocage, flatbed thing. I did actually drive it home at 70 mph. That was about 5 years ago. Fun fact, it had brass bolts holding the trans crossmember in. Its a manual truck that someone used an automatic tunnel cover on and chopped a hole in it lol.
