4 speed handling a 351?

Ok, So my neighbor is going to sell me his 1988 F150 for $150 and it has a 4.9 with a 4 speed OD tranny (3sp with OD). The tranny and motor are good with pretty low miles, So I was thinking that this tranny would be a great setup for the 351 in my bronco. I was wondering if it can handle it though..has anyone had any experience with this tranny? The overdrive is very tempting, but I don't wanna go through all the trouble of putting it in and as soon as I give it a little gas it shreds it.

Also, will I be able to put the tailshaft from the C6 behind that tranny, or will I have to get buy one for that tranny?

shit, i'd put the whole enchilada in the bronco. the 300 L6 is an AWESOME engine. you can't kill it.

that's just my opinion

I would not go through all the work to change out your C6 for the SROD... First of all, as I'm sure you know, there are alot of things to tranfer over to the truck that it does not have to be able to use the manual tranny. Also, I'm pretty sure that the transfer case, or if not that, then definately the linkage will have to be moved. Secondly, the SROD is fairly weak, and won't take alot of horsepower or abuse. When I got my truck the reverse gear was destroyed because it had been towed backwards by a tractor while in gear, which shows how weak it is. Compare the gears of that to the ones in a NP 435 and you'll see the difference. Also I've heard that the aluminum housings crack too.

What I would do is maybe put on some 33's and keep the C6 that you have. You won't lose much of a crawl ratio (the SROD's first gear is 3.2 to 1, your C6 is 2.5 to 1), plus with an auto tranny your engine can keep running when coming up to a large rock or whatever instead of stalling. You'll kind of have an "overdrive" at the same time with the bigger tires. Now, I'm pretty sure this won't actually help fuel mileage with the larger tires, but there is a possibility. Still alot better than doing an SROD swap.

I would really love to have the NP-435, but like the C6, it doesn't have OD, and that's what I'm really pushing for right now, especially since this is my Daily Driver and I'm planning on keeping it for a while now.

Right now I have 31/10.50's on it, and even with those tires (and also making it a slug) it gets worse gas mileage, and it doesn't have really big difference in the RPM range.

I would love to have the money right now to buy a ZF-5 (I checked the prices on those thing :shocked ) but for right now, I'd just like to have something that will let me cruise a little better on the highway.

Oh, and Bri_Guy5, I've been thinking about that too. There's two trucks sitting in my yard now with the 4.9's in them, and they make great low end torque, and pretty good gas mileage too. I've never had a 4wd one, but I bet they'd do pretty good.

Oh yeah, and the tranny is a manual.....

Ok, thanks for the reply guys. I'll probably part some of it out eventually, since I don't really wanna put a junk tranny in it and I still don't know if the tailshaft off the C6 will fit on it. I don't know what I'll do with the 4.9 yet, maybe I can use it as a core charge and keep my 351 to rebuild and set aside for the future.
