Well today went for a drive since wifey said it was shifting really hard every once in awhile, Well it did it today, would rpm high then shift hard. Had to turn car off and back on for it to stop. She said whenever it did this the OD would blink and it did for me. So pulled codes and got these, my first thought was the tps sensor being bad and having to replace but then got these and kinda confused. Also speedo is working, everythign else is working cept the OD light blinking and occassional hard shift like once every 3 weeks or so.

412 Idle speed system not controlling idle properly (generally idle too low) - ISC
411 Idle speed system not controlling idle properly (generally idle too high) -ISC
129 No MAP or Mass Air Flow sensor change during "goose" test - MAP MAF
167 No Throttle Position sensor change in "goose" test (must get at least 25% rotation) - TPS

Lol wtf is a goose test, let me know some answers that can help me out because I know this hard shifting every once in awhile can kill a tranny.

Thx dev

you need to pull codes with the truck at operating temperature.

in the "goose test" you gotta floor it. not keep it floored, just a quick throttle blip.

check the TPS and MLPS for proper resistance, voltages, alignments, etc.

how's the fluid look?

after poking around more, and ya the engine was at operating temp when tested. Ill re test with the wot when it gives that code to do that so it can cycle (alot of searching and i found out what it was) I tested the tps and closed its at 1.01v and wot its at 4.60v. Would that tps being under 5v really make it hard shift once in a blue moon?

O ya the fluid looks good doesnt smell and is still red

it's possible. i'm not privy on the actual specifications, but if you can adjust the tps, try and get it within range.

when is it shifting hard? part throttle? WOT? only a hard shift on 1-2 upshift? does it shift up to OD after it shifts hard?

when was the last trans service? mileage of trans?

#5 ·
dont know when last trans service was, when its gets goofy its hard shifting thru all gears WOT/part doesnt matter and only on up shift never on down shifts, ill just turn car off for a few secs then back up, OD light goes off and drives back normal shifting. How much is the range off for were it should be.

idk on tranny but 228k on engine so guessing same on tranny. Im really thinking its got to be a bad sensor or something somewhere since it rarely does it and goes away after car is off and back on. If it was actual tranny it would steadily get worse and just keep doing it.

i'd say you're looking at some sort of electrical issue. make sure the plugs on the harness are all clean and free of dirt grease or oil.

did you read the E4OD diagnosis thread? it's a sticky in the tech-write up section. stangmata wrote it.

ty and ya read all that, ima get out there tomorrow when its not 100 degrees outside and re clean all the connections and go from there, hopefully that will fix whats going on and not freak wifey out anymore cuz I thought she was crazy since its the first time its ever done it for me.

i still think it's strange you had a hard shift and a flashing OD light but no trans specific codes. you need to yank them right when it has the issue (without shutting it off) and see what codes it has right then. sometimes they don't store codes in the hard memory.

nope, i actually took the harness connectors out and blew some compressed air in the and some di electric grease on them and took for a drive believe it or not it shits smoother, serious wtf the mlps is what was leading me to believe was not really making a good connection. She drives really good now and no sparatic idle anymore. O well free fix and ty guys for the help.

well today drove it around and at first was doing really good but after she got warmed up guess what it came back. This time had code reader and still no gd code. Temp on the tranny sits around 170ish so Idk wtf is going on since no code and tested the tps and was still putting at good volts. And for it to be doing it once its fully warmed up has me stumped as to whats going on.

And the one thing i never tested was the mlps sensor which leads me to believe once it gets heated up since its on the tranny is causes it to start to screw up. I think I may just replace it since these sensors have been known for many probs. Also I put it in neutral while driving and back into drive and gd just reved had to drop it back into 2nd and then back up into D and still it wouldnt work unless I came to a stop and put in park and back into d for it to move. This weekend gonna also put tranny cooler and filter on her along with this new sensor.

classic MLPS symptoms.

Hi, I have a very similar issue with my 94 bronco. I do not have the OD light blinking but my issue is very sporadic. I have not personally pulled any codes but i did take it to 2 different transmissions shops. The first shop said the tranny is fine and they think it was a sensor. I do not recall which sensor it was but i will pull the paper work and post tomorrow. Needless to say i replaced the sensor and still no luck. I then took to shop number 2 who gave me 2 pages of diagnostics on the transmission. They found nothing wrong as well and they say the only thing it could be is the speedo sending a bad signal. I picked up a used cluster off ebay and will be replacing in the next week or so. I will keep you posted with my findings. Downside is with my the new cluster being used, if the problem persists i really dont know if i have 2 bad speedometers or not.

ya from what i found out after endless searching it can be the bad neutral safety switch/mlps or the tps, i know the tps is good on mine since I tested but the mlps I didnt and since its 40 bucks might as well replace it since its easy. I think they may have replace ur tps or you actually may have a new bad sensor which happens quite a bit believe it or not.

Going through the same symptoms, PLUS tranny acted like it shifts to neutral from fourth. Only every once in a while. Patiently waiting for the arrival of my new MLPS...:D

hey dev,

this just happened to me last week, and i know this sounds crazy but when the end result of my issue was i blew the overdrive and cruise control fuses. and thats what caused my OD light blinking the codes (same as yours) other than the goosing.

REASON: i wanted to replace my rear speakers.. so i did.. but my speaker grilles need to be screwed in to stay in the hole (previous owner was screw happy).. so me screwing it back i. i nipped a wire that i grounded out and it blew those fuses.. im not saying thats what you did.. but you have the sames codes and issues i just had..

check you fuses.. hopefully thats it.. something stupid as a 25c fuse lol let me know

So here's the deal, I just bought(stole) a '95. At test drive the tranny wouldn't shift out of 1st at all, but I also took note that speedo/odometer wasn't working either. My first thought was "fuse". After wheeling n dealing the price for a truck with a burnt tranny, I paid the man, fixed a rusty brake line, popped a fuse in, backed up and drove away, with the tranny shifting.

Sounds like a great deal, huh? Well, I found out why the fuse was pulled. All the interior lights and warning chime will not turn off unless you pull the fuse.(thinking a bad door switch) So anyways I noticed that it wants to bang into gear when going from P or N into R or D. It also wants to shift hard from 1st to 2nd. BUT, it only seems to shift hard when there is no torque....If from a stop I floor it, it shifts as smooth as you want it. Take off from a stop and ease off the gas before the shift, SLAM. Something else I noticed, when the fuse is pulled, the shift from P or N to R or D is smooth.

Would these syptoms fit in with the MLPS?? Or should I start to look else where?
