hot start problem

I'm having an intermittent problem with starting, especially when hot. When cold my Bronco starts right up,it seems to drag a little sometimes, turning over slowly for a second and then cranking quickly and starting. When hot it sometimes acts like the battery is dead and wont turn over ,but if you wait a while ,it starts. When it refused to start in a parking lot 2 days ago, I tried to jump the solenoid with a screwdriver, thinking the solenoid contacts were bad but that made no difference at all, still acted like it was dead battery, push started it and then never had problem again until this afternoon when I got home from the beach, and same thing. Went in the house took a shower and then it started right up . Looking for advice , only recently purchased this rig and starter and solenoid both appear to be new ..

My first guess would be starter heat soak. It is a fairly common ford problem, especialy if the starter is older, or if it has uncoated headers. Even if the starter is new, if it is a crappy autozone, or other big box starter, it might have been a piss poor reman from the beginning. I would start with a heat shield, if that doesn't work, you could wrap the exhaust and manifold/header with heat wrap near the starter. It can also be a poor quality or previously overheated wire going to the starter. I have parted some out where the insulation was melted off the last 4"s of wire by the starter. If none of that stuff works, buy a quality starter.

Another possibilty, but not as likely, is ignition timing that is to far advanced. Check the timing with a timing light and see where it is at.

Put in 00 Guage wires. Your starter is breathing thru a straw while running a marathon. My rig gave me the same problem. Ford Reman, new vatozone starter, 4 ga straw to draw the power through. Put on a larger cable, problem went away. If that doesnt fix it, you can get a gear reduction starter from a '97 or a '98 Exploder with a 302. It "should" be a gear reduction starter.
