Hey everyone,
I'm 18 and going to college for computer information systems. I've always had an interest in cars and trucks and recently bought a truck for a project and to learn on.
So... A few weeks ago I bought a 77 F100(150?) 4x4 for $300. When I checked it out it didn't seem that bad but then again I bought it with the idea that I could get my money back from parting it out if it was garbage. I had my second cousin tow it home for me with his tow truck because the front right brake disc had a section broke off.
The details are:
77 F100 (I know the cab was changed. maybe f150 chassis?)
NP435 Transmission, NP205 Transfer case, dana44 front and 9in rear.
This is what the truck looked like when I first got it home.
For a 1977 truck in upstate New York it looked pretty good...
It started and ran great even considering the old gas it had.
The aftermarket parts on the truck that I noticed were the stainless steel
front bumper and huge ass stainless fuel cell looking gas tank.
I poked around inside and one of the first things I noticed was that there was fiberglass all along the back of the inside of the cab where the floor meets the back. I ripped this out just to see how bad it was...
These are some pics of after I took the interior out.
I figure for the time being I can cut it clean and put in a section of sheet metal that is bent 90* to match the back of the cab.
I also found some other spots where one of the previous owners used fiberglass.
Fiber glass & remaining metal floor pans
Box probably has more fiberglass & bondo than metal.
What the underside of the cab looks like.
Frame.
Passenger cab mount.
-This is where I'm at now.
My idea is to remove the front end of the body completely because only the fenders and grill are really save able. I want to remove the cab so I can work on it better and clean and paint the frame under their too.
My friends dad has a 70's F250 that's rusted out and has been sitting in his driveway for years. It has a recently (mileage wise) rebuilt 390 that has a spark plug broke off in the head. I want to buy this off him to use as a parts truck because I know someone who may want the frame from it.
His truck has a 4spd so I want to see if I can swap the bellhousing to my transmission or use his transmission. I want to do some work to the 390 such as a cam, intake, headers and carb. Hopefully I can find out who sells the mounts and perches to go from my 300 I6 to the 390.
I'll see what I can do with the cab. If it's save able then that'll be nice but I don't know with all that fiberglass in there. There's a place called garry's u pull it about an hour and a half from me so I'm hoping to eventually get a cab and box from them if they have them. When I was there last week they had at least 5 70's ford trucks. I also want to lift it 4" and run 33's for now. I shouldn't have any driveshaft issues with a 4" lift right?
Sorry for the insanely long post, this is my first project and also my first write up. I hope I can turn it into something I can be proud of but we'll see what I can do with it.
Tips, Info, advice, etc... would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
-Justin
