3 year comparison, Rust Converter VS Rust Encapsulator

About 3 yrs ago I noticed there was a spot on the bottom of both my doors where the seal had rubbed off the paint and it had started rusting. Surface rust with a little pitting in a few spots. So I had just ordered some Rust Bullet for another project and I had some One Step rust converter laying around, so I decided to do a comparison between the two.

Both doors had the rust sanded slightly, removing the surface rust but leaving some rust in the pits. Then the pass side door got the Rust Converter, and the drivers side got rust bullet. Both where then coated with spray can touch up paint from PaintScratch.com.

3years later, here are the results.

Drivers side with RustBullet brand Rust encapsulatior..

No Rust

Passenger side with One-Step brand rust converter.

RUST!

Pretty much speaks for itself. Rust converters are snake oil that do nothing, rust encapsulators seal it off so no oxygen can get to it.
No oxygen = no rust.

The only problem with this little test is now I have to Re-Repair the pass side door.

Wow good comparison, and definitely great showing of results over the long term. I'm glad to see at the time you had thought about the difference in products, and tried them.

But while I would absolutely without a doubt would take rust bullet over one step, for being 3 years before rust shows through, still shows some effectiveness. How's the difference in price?

I would say it is no more affective than the rattle can touch up paint would provide.

Rust bullet, and all rust encapsulators (POR-15, Eastman, ect) are fairly expensive.

But hey, $5.00 for something that doesn't work, or $25.00 for something that does.

Great comparision! Thank you very much for shareing this, I'm sure many people will use this info. Have you thought about contacting RB with your results, there might be a little $$$ in it some how. Just a thought.

This is excellent and very useful/informative. The fact that three years have past to show the results is the shiz!!! I have to do some work on the underside of my 89.

A few years ago i coated the rear floor with rust bullet and then covered it herculiner. The other day i had to pull up the rear carpet to get to the rear budy mount bolts and had to cut the herc and peal it up and when i did it pealed up some rust bullet and it was all rusted under it.
