SO i need to swap my rear axle. I was thinking about finding one in a 90s E350 van. Any particular thing to look for? Any years better than others? DO these have the VSS TOne Ring in them? Are they the right width?

I searched, did not find. Killed a few hours looking to so please dont flame me too hard.

Junk yards around here have tons of these vans in them. So I have lots of selection. DUnno how im gonna pull it without a fork lift, but hey, ill rent one if they dont mind, lol

If you can find an 250 or E350 with factory disc brakes that would be ideal, but all the ones from the 90's up have VSS. The FFD60 I have is from a 1997 E250. Check the door codes and see what gear ratio the axle has and see if it came with a factory limited slip. If you get an axle that matched the gear ratio of your front differential that'll allow you to use 4wd until you regear.

You're better off pulling a sterling 10.25 out of an f2/f350. They're stronger, plus they all have the vss after 92. And they're dirt cheap. But some f350's did come with D60's and just like said below some have disk brakes in the vans. I'd still grab a sterling before a dana60. I've seen more than a handful of people snap D60 shafts on 37's with an open diff. I have quite a few friends plus a ton of members on here who run sterlings with lockers on 40's and not a single issue.

how do you tell if its a full floater? Will the door codes be the same as for the bronco? Like H9 is a limited slip?
Full float hubs

Semi Float (like bronco's)

I thought Sterlings leaked bad though? Is there a fix for that? And es i may be a little bit of a noob on this, but im not a NOOB. This is just one thing ive never tinkered with.

:stupid this.

besides, if you swap a dana 60 in it, now you'll have to do an 8lug swap on the fronts to have matching lug patterns.

unless you're putting tires over 38'' on this truck, you will be FINE with the 8.8....really, you will. it is a GOOD rear axle.

if you're throwing a 60 under there because it's "heavy duty" or the "cool thing to do", you're doing it for the wrong reasons, and creating un-necessary work for yourself.

get the sterling. i'm sure bigger tires and new gears are in your future...this will cure the pinion leak issue. they dont leak horribly bad. my rear main seal leaks far worse than my sterling does. a switch to the "long spline" gears (post 93 i believe) when you regear solves that issue. a little info on 60s vs 10.25's
spline count-many 60's have 30 spline axle shafts. to get 35 spline you have bore out the spindle, buy new shafts and a new diff. sterlings have 35 splines from the factory
diff cutoff-60's have to have the diff changed when you go numerically higher than 4.10. sterlings dont have to have the diff changed regardless of ratio.
"tonnage"-60's are mainly considered a 3/4 ton-light duty 1 ton truck axle. sterlings were on all f-250's, f-350's and i've seen them on a few f-450's. they are a true 1 ton (debatebly a 1 1/4ton truck axle).
VSS-while 60's came in alot of vehicles if they dont have the VSS already on them you'll have to fabricate a mount for it. it can be done. the write up is on here some where. all post 92 sterlings have the same VSS your bronco uses. plugs right in.
both axles pretty much bolt right up. the sterling will require your driveshaft to be shortened (approximately 3").

and like unforgiven said, either of these axle's will require you to do an 8 lug conversion on the front. no they dont make 5x5.5-8x6.5 conversion spacers either. i checked about 50 different sites already. this does give you the chance to upgrade to dual piston calipers if you're doing an sas using a 79 44 out of an f-250 or bronco (the axle housing is interchangeable between 70's ford trucks..just swap the outers [spindles on out]). otherwise good luck on making the chevy parts work on the ttb. and like unforgiven said as well...unless you need a 60 or sterling the 8.8 isnt THAT bad. i had one that did just fine with a detroit, 4.10's, 35's and arizona rocks on a weekly basis.
