EGR tube

I'm wondering.....I found the tube from the EGR to the exhaust manifold is sheared in half. Drawing fresh air instead of exhaust in to the intake....How would that affect the idle and running quality, performance...etc? I've a new one on order...just curious.

Pull codes and see what's indicated but until you replace it the performance is going to off because the EGR valve = exhaust gas return - isn't really connected so the valve won't open and close properly at intervals and will continue throwing codes so when it's been replaced clear out any codes using the Ford Code Reader and you're good to go.

Not enought to notice. The EGR system isn't active at idle, and it's designed NOT to affect cruise performance. So it's just eating away at your pistons, and dumping exhaust forward of the cabin air intake...
True, it is not designed to affect cruise performance, but it does. Design engineers now exploit the EGR to support performance improvements.

In addition to polluting the environment and slowly damaging engine internals, the higher combustion temperatures resulting from the lack of an EGR will also increase the chance of detonation due to higher octane requirements, throttling losses due to reduced intake manifold pressure and increased thermal energy loss to combustion chamber surfaces leaving less for conversion to usable mechanical energy.

This may not be much of an issue for the OEM engine, but may be significant for the performance engine and yahoos with over-advanced timing.

It's 2012, really a "paper clip" is about as accurate as fart in a wind storm IMO, cheap maybe if you want to waste time, frustrate yourself and kill some brain cells, they don't give you a "diagnostic book" with fault code explanations with a paper clip to solve problems ....:rofl:

He mentioned running quality and performance and I have to believe as we've all come to learn that if continue to it for sevferal days if anything's "disconnected" for any reason on an EFI BKO it will have some affect, maybe I misunderstood...lol lol

As long as the Code Reader has fresh batteries it's a good investment, quicker and easier to use short of an isolated break down I'll put it against a paper clip any time, :iiss...I'm surprised you didn't critize my video, opinions are like ........

I still remember you told me a "non-tilt" steering wheel didn't have an "upper ignition actuator", how's that working for ya lately! :doh0715:

Steve is right on.

With modern technology, many are ignorant of how emissions systems operate and the fact that some are actually beneficial to current engine architecture. They are stuck in "old school" technology and do not realize that EFI has been refined and exploited for both performance and efficiency. As an example, I admire and engage with others that desire to tweak performance, yet I cannot believe that I am still seeing others wanting to "upgrade" to carburation in lieu of Electronic Fuel Injection.

To better answer your question about EGR Elimination Kits, many do not know any better and are simply exploited for the dollar (similar to the Airaid Throttle Body Spacer). The legal elimination of existing catalytic converters and supporting secondary emissions systems clearly demonstrates some States/Counties are not impacted nor are overly concerned about your health and environment. Yet.

Bronco Emissions Systems
  • Secondary Air Injection. This is used to support the catalytic converter's oxidation reaction, and to reduce emissions when an engine is started from cold.
  • Exhaust Gas Recirculation. This system routes a metered amount of exhaust into the intake tract under particular operating conditions which dilutes the air/fuel charge to reduce peak combustion chamber temperatures.
  • Catalytic Converter. This converts hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and NOx into less harmful gases by using a combination of platinum, palladium and rhodium as catalysts.
  • Evaporative Emissions Control. This system collects vapors from the fuel tank in a canister containing activated carbon. During certain engine operational modes, the vapors are introduced into the engine to be burned.

I've had my Ford Code Reader with diagnostic book for many years and not once in all this time have I ever had ANY PROBLEMS pulling codes, had false or inaccurate readings or incomplete tests as long as the batteries were fresh so to me it's a viable tool that works quickly, easily and it's fun so what's wrong with that.

People can make up their minds on what they want to use, not all of us want to remain in the cave you know!

I sure as hell wouldn't want to be stuck on the side of the road with no internet 'link" access..lol lol...in the dark screwing around with paper clip, no diagnostic book using flash light trying to figure out what's wrong, some people don't want to do things the hard way...

Since you've been MIA here for so many years I've managed to read plenty of threads in the 7 continuous years I've spent here and IMHO a "paper clip" is not a tool. However if you don't like Code Readers because of a bad experience or don't want to spend money to buy one so be it but maybe you should read some threads on diplomacy and let other people make their own choices without pissing on someone or something just because you either don't like or agree, one rotten apple doesn't really spoil the bushel, IMO a more mature approach you would think.

i dont use a code reader just cause i'm not willing to spend the money. a piece of speaker wire works for me. lol.......look at me instigating....i agree with you JK. everyone has and is entitled to their own approach in the repair of their vehilce. i just try and do most things on the cheap.

Seattle, while i don't doubt your knowledge of EFI systems (after all, i've read several of your threads and you're obviously an expert, and no i'm not saying that sarcastically either and my following questions are out of my own ignorance) i do doubt alot of the claims people have made regarding emissions and the environment. i've heard evironmentalists talk about the "haze" over certain large cities in the US and around the world however, i've seen similar "haze" in places that don't have many vehicles if any at all. if anyone in any real sort of power, surrounded by all their "experts" truly was worried about the environment we'd all be driving electrical, natural gas and low sulfur diesels tomorrow, so that leads me to discount many of the "environmental" claims. which leads to what people like us are really concerned about: how does it affect me? i get that the EGR will lower combustion temps and result in a cool running engine but wouldn't a properly functioning cooling system do the same? As for NOx levels, properly functioning catalytic converters should take care of that, should they not? I ask because my EGR valve has failed and i'm contemplating spending the money to replace it altogether or do away with it altogether. Doing away will should boost performance from what i've researched. I don't have emissions testing where i'm at and eventually i want to swap in a Cummins 4bt so i'm not wanting to spend a whole lot of money on the engine. replacing the whole EGR system and eliminating it altogether seem to cost about the same however, getting rid of it adds the assurance that i won't have to replace it again in the future. but, how will the higher combustion temps and increase in NOx levels truly affect my engine over the next 2 years as i get ready for this swap? i get 12 mpg now...how will doing either affect my gas mileage? thanks in advance for you're helping to educate the ignorant. :)
