Finally installed some grab handles in my 95

I have a lot of people complain about how much of a pain in the ass it is to get in the pass side. Especially my dad lol. Well i sourced some new factory ford black grab handles through my local dealer and my dad helped me get them installed this morning. Used some metal nut inserts that use a tool to grab the threads and expand the insert on the back side of the metal securing it in place, the rear hole of the grab handle uses a hole that was already there on both sides just had to be drilled larger for the nut insert. I mocked up the grab handles once the rear nut inserts were installed to mark and drill the front nut insert holes. We took some masking tape and aligned the edge of the tape along the indentation on the headliner that was left from the plastic trim. Stuck a pick through the front upper trim hole and then marked the two nut inserts and transferred the tape to the trim to mark and drill the holes. Since there is a air gap between the trim and nut inserts i ended up using flange nuts that were approx 3/8” thick. I put the flange of the spacer nut towards the trim, that way when the handle bolts get tightened they will slightly pull the trim in but then stop when the spacer nut gets compressed. They turned out great and are super solid. Ended up installing one on both sides.

Once I can start working on my stuff again...I'll be doing this. These are invaluable if you need to get in with...lets say busted ribs..
Curious if you tried looking at A-pillar mounting at all? Like in a Super Duty or F150(99-up)

I added one above the plastic over the door like ScottMoore's in the pic below. My altitude challenged wife uses it all the time. Mine came from the junkyard, out of a Lincoln's back seat iirc (The handle came from the JY, not the wife. I got her at Ace Hardware :toothless). If I had it to do over, I'd probably try to install an A pillar handle like you find in a Super Duty. She says the handle in the SD is easier to use.

I put one on the pass. side.

Problem with the a pillar mount is that the trim sticks out way farther than the a piller, im sure it can be done but would need a lot of shimming behind the plastic trim

took a look at a super duty/F150 pillar handle...its built to accommodate the trim vs pillar difference it seems.

I don't imagine you've got one Tom but if anybody came across the setup, I'd love to see how the SD handles that gap between body and trim. That's one of the things that made me delay. Too much washer stacking or the like could easily lead to the handle pulling down, warping the metal, etc.

well as it turns out, I actually have an expedition/f150 pair I can take off before I scrap the rig. Dad had his one off the super duty here today for me to see. I can get photos soon. Still not ready to do much stretching in a way that will let me get them off yet. Got a few more adjustments before I can say I'm back to the 'normal' I was prior to the wreck. Cant even get a 16.5lbs bag of dog food out of the cart yet. Got it in because I could let it fall in from the higher shelf.
I even have a spare A-pillar trim to screw up on.

Nice. I can patiently wait to see but... if it's the Ford light grey interior, I'd be interested in picking a set. Regardless, knowledge is really where it's at. Appreciate the coming effort but take your time and don't jack up your healing process. Can't even count how many times I've pushed myself too close toward the end of a long recovery and set myself back into major frustration. ;)

@fordbronco1995
did you have any 'in progress' photos while these were going in? or really not much to it as they were installed.? I can see the value of possibly adding both an overhead and an A-pillar. Just sorta here to pick your brain and view photos whilest I heal up.

Heres a simple solution for the a pillar

Heres the super duty a pillar handles in a obs ford. Not sure how secure it is but looks kinda funky, the superduty door opening is larger and those handles seem like they would impede a passenger being able to get in the cab. Plus it doesnt fit the best with the pillar trim. Gotta also remember the vent window wont be functional, so to me the handle above the door looks the most proper to me

This is the thread that gave me the inspiration

hmm..I think I'm going to give that try..

Thanks for the inspiration, I definitely need to do this. At 6'1", I don't think twice about hopping in, but nearly all passenger I have (especially my lady friends) are fumbling around trying to find a grab handle until either they remember, or I remind them, that there isn't one. And I only have 32" tires.

Looks great. Nice clean install. Ive been planning on doing that, but was thinking of using the windshield pillars similar to the Econoline E series vans, but now you've given me another option. What was the approx cost you paid for the grab hsndles from the dealer ??Thx

i got them a little cheaper through work but i think normal cost on the handles were $15 each and the plugs were $4 each i believe. My cost through work i got the two handles and 4 plugs for right at $40. Thats with a 10% mark up and tax
