Hey Guys,

My Dad has been working on installing the 460 and NV4500 on my truck, and ran into a snag. This is the email I got this morning:

"I tried to install the transmission this morning, but it won't fit. You might want to do some research on the engine mounting brackets. The engine set to high & I can't get the trans. to go in. I tried to let the back of the engine down a little to allow the trans. to line up but, the cylinder heads hit on the firewall."

The engine mounts I have are these ones from JBG:

If I were there, I could offer some kind of help to him, but I am turning to you guys for some help. Thanks guys!

After talking with my dad for a while he said that the engine is too high up in the engine compartment... (?) Not sure if its the mounts, the perches, or anything else. What he is guessing is that if the engine were to sit lower, there wouldn't be a clearance issue. I asked how much clearance it needed, and he said more than a couple inches, so the body lift would be out of the question. I think it is something else that is causing this. Kinda doing a little research on the swap, it doesn't seem like anyone had this kind of a clearance issue.

Are there differences between the Bronco frame perches and F-series perches that had 460s? This is the only thing I can think of right now. Maybe the frame perches on a 79 Bronco with a 351M are taller than those of an F-series with a 460? Just a thought.

Second that.

This is how the engine is sitting in my truck right now:

Looking at other pictures of 460 installs, mine does look like it is sitting pretty damn high. Higher than others anyway. Still not really seeing what is going on with it. I'm sure once this is figured out, the NV4500 will not be posing such an issue.

Might have figured something out...

When I was going through my pictures of the engine build, something just happened to catch my eye...I was looking at the JBG motor mounts picture:

Notice how they are pointing down...

Here is the picture that caught my eye:

The center piece is pointing up. They are bolted on right, it just looks like the center piece needs to be flipped around. I'm not sure if this is the exact problem or not, but I figure to at least correct this, and see where it goes.

Going a different route...going to get InfoFord's engine perches, and go with the 83-97 mounts. I just need to find the plate that goes between the mounts and the engines, and the junk yards around here are picked dry. Anyone have an extra set laying around?

Have you called and talk to the guys at JBG yet? :)

You know, those guys were/are "junk yard guys". :)
(you can sense that in their returns policy LOL;)

If anyone could help you, it'd be them since it's their
product you're having trouble with and they'll just know
lots of stuff about swaps too, I figure?

My vote is on the perches... "wrong engine perches".

Found some of the stamped plates today! Only 20 bucks, and in great shape! Got the mounts as well, just need the perches.

Alvin, I haven't tried calling JBG or emailing either. Those mounts are the only thing I've had an issue with, (I've purchased so much stuff from them!!) I am going to go the InfoFord route with the perches and everything and end up just selling the JBG mounts for probably $100 or so shipped. Hopefully this all works out, and it will just be another big step to getting my Bronco on the road.

judging from your pictures I can't really tell that your engine is as high as you are stating and my perches sets the engine correct spot and judging from what you post I doubt it is going to give you a 2" drop it might move the engine forward a little and lower it a bit from what you have.

My perches will at least give you a good base line to go from but you may still need to do mods to get the transmission to go in never tried with the NV4500 conversion so can’t say what will get in the way
I would recommend installing the radiator and shroud with fan so you can keep the fan centered in the shroud as you prolly going to have to make your own transmission mount.

Plus my perches are intended to use OEM truck manifolds so there is no guarantee of header fitment
Lowering and moving the engine may cause clearance issues with the headers
Not trying to talk out of buying my perches just giving a heads up that it may not be your cure all.
They will only set the engine correctly in the hole is all, they will do nothing more

Alright, sorry for the long wait, but I do have an update...The engine is in, the tranny is bolted up, and transfer case is bolted in as well. Tomorrow we'll be welding in a chunk of steel as a custom crossmember, then finishing up bolting in the transfer case mount. After that, we will be towing the bronco to the driveshaft shop so they can make custom length shafts. We had to shave about 1/4" off the passenger side perch from InfoFord to fit the passenger side header. Everything goes together really good, and I will try to get some sort of a writeup/pictures updated soon.
