well i was reading on the mustang forum that you can use the power steering fluid instead of the atf, but it will be noisier and not as smooth...any ideas otherwise?

meh, I lost a seal on my ps box and dumped 2 quarts of ps fluid, 4 quarts of oil then all I had left was 2 quarts of 85w140. so, ya, anything goes. :toothless

I use a baster to remove power steering fluid; don't do this if the fluids are not compatible. I've tried everything. Nothing gets rid of the whine.

You could probably run coolant in the damn thing if you wanted.

 

Never heard of running gear oil in there, but if it works for you I won't throw stones. I'm running ATF myself. If you ever suspect that you might go hydro assist you should run synthetic, because a lot of guys say that is the only thing that will prevent foaming in the reservoir.

 

I did it as a last resort effort. My pump is shot and so is the steering box.


I had no idea if it would work or not. It works, but its alittle stiffer to turn.

I run straight Lucas in mine. No probs. No typical Ford whine either.

 

Type F stopped the majority of my whine.

Good for you, I'm glad that worked out. But for a lot of guys, they have foaming problems, and synthetic is the only thing that seems to be able to solve it.

 

Either should work but I accidentally mixed them in my Thunderbird (didn't check to see what it had in the reservoir before adding) and it mucked up the pump. Main reason was probably already on the way out but I'm sure the mix didn't help any.

 

How Do you flush the power steering fluid anyway? And what fluid did you use to get rid of the whine?

A saginaw swap is about the only thing that'll get rid of that whine.

 

Ok but I really want to know how you flush the Power steering system?



Also I didn't know that you could use Automatic Transmission Fluid in the Power Steering system?

yes ATF is one of the only things you should run in the steering, as for flushing it out i just remove the low press return hose, cap the nipple on the reservoir, start it and turn the wheel lock to lock while someone fills it with ATF untill clean fluid comes out the return hose


someone might have a better flushing method
