Can't Fill with Fuel

Hello!

I've been plagued with this issue since I put a new gas tank in I believe. I can't fill the tank with fuel without going incredibly slow or having gas come back up the filler tube and spilling everywhere.

Would it be a problem with the fuel tank vent? How could I check if some of the line is bad? Anytime I try to fill it just foams right back up. It's incredibly annoying.

It's a 1984 Ford Bronco. The Charcoal cannister no longer has a cap or the vacuum line connecting it but I assume that's not a problem.

Yo Inverhyt,
As ThrustMaster advised,

Fill & Vent Tube pics in; "...pre 87 Broncos & F Series use a small corrugated plastic vent tube tucked into the top of the steel filler neck , but it often kinks & blocks fuel from entering the tank easily. 87 & up use a heavy plastic filler hose inside the steel vent neck, which allows easier filling. The necks are interchangeable, so it's a good upgrade for an old truck, especially if filling is becoming a problem. It also allows the use of a more modern gas cap..."

They suggest; "...look up under the box to visually compare this with your filler neck..."

I replaced my tank but had the same problem with my 84

The only way I could get gas in was to park the driver's rear tire on a 4x4 like a ramp. Then she filled fine.

The body mounts were so shot the filler neck opening eventually lowered and the neck was essentially going up hill into the tank.

I noticed the new neck I bought was a tad long and it sort of kinked. So I trimmed it to fit better

And I replaced the body mounts and adjusted the filler neck to make sure it was pointing down hill (opening higher than the tank opening) and it works like a wet dream.

It is a tube inside a tube design. The outer tube is fill vent and the inner tube is the fill. It is easy to not notice. Due to age I am willing to bet the inner tube is collapsed or kinked.

Fillerneck Supply has both hoses. The actual metal part is no longer carried by them, but last time I looked was available on Amazon.

I mean. I don't have one.

If you don't have one, then you're probably pouring gas down both the vent tube AND the gas tube, which makes venting a mess.

I had this issue really badly on my '81 and would often times spend 20 minutes filling it up from empty. It was downright tedious.

I replaced the whole thing with a filler neck and tube from an '87+ (like the ones Miesk posted) and it completely resolved the issue.
You can grab one from a junk yard, or buy the whole setup new (although they're kind of expensive).

Is it just Broncos that have that filler or can one off a F150-350 work

Yeah, it's Bronco specific, since the tanks are a different shape and in a different location than the trucks, so the filler neck is perfectly form fitted to reach.

I have a filler neck I picked off an 89. I remember it has a couple dents, but it has the vent hose and I believe the outer hose too. If you think you might be interested, shoot me a PM.

There's a Old Ford parts dealer over here in the NW that has a stash of parts. Managed to get one from him in the same day from an 87. I fitted it up and it all works fantastic! Thank you for all the help!

If anyone near the Portland area wants the aforementioned dealer I will absolutely give you his number.
