Thanks Justin, I figured most of the above out, but....back to cutting, exactly what do you recommend to cut the shape into the headliner? The headliner is a cloth and cardboard or pressboard wood backing or ??? I don't want to snag the cloth headliner with whatever I use to cut.
I was initially worried about cutting the headliner too, but it cuts easy, I used a utility knife as well, it is cloth and a styrophome backing, I cut a square hole about 3 inches long and 2 inches wide to feed the wires through. I didnt take it all the was down like the OP poster did, just enough where it dropped a few inches to feed wire through.

Hello all. I have read through this entire thread and checked out several others, but i want to be sure i have it right. I have found a 1996 Eddie Bauer Bronco unmolested and will be removing the OHC and headiner this week. I will be installing it in my 86 Bronco. It sounds like all i need to get off the 96 is:
The headliner and mounting pieces,
The temp sensor from the front drivers side.
The antiglare Mirror?
As much of the wiring as i can get.

Sounds too easy and I am double checking because this thread has a lot of Explorer references and i don't want to miss something. Is there anything else i need and where is it located? I should be able to figure the wiring and splicing with the info already in the thread. I only have one shot at the truck so i need to be sure.

One other question. Do i need to use the antiglare rear view mirror? is the compass fed from the mirror or a module in the console? I don't really have a need for the antiglare mirror, but will mount it if necessary.

Thanks for the help.

Nope, it really is that easy and that is everything you will need. No, you do not need the RV mirror. The compass in the OHC is self contained in the OHC.

You can also use a newer RV mirror out of new Chevy's/Ford's/Dodge's that have compass and/or Temp displays. Just get one made by Gentex.

Does that EB have the woodgrain dash trim, cargo net, or the cargo cover? If we could come to a agreement on price, I'd buy them...especially the woodgrain dash trim.

I am in the process of an OHC install which I pulled from a j/y about a year ago from a 94 EB with the electrochromatic mirror. Unfortunately I forgot to get the temp sensor, and when I went back the EB was gone. I pulled a temp sensor from an Explorer on a recent trip along with 12" of it's wiring thinking it was the same. Looking at all the wiring diagrams and write ups, I have come to the conclusion I have the C299 OHC plug. Most Explorer wiring diagrams run two wires to the OHC from the temp sensor, but in the 94 Bronco diagram only one wire runs to the console out of the ambient temp sensor, the other wire (LB/O) is spliced to a ground.

If I ground the second wire and run the feed back to the console, will it function properly like the diagram, or will he Explorer temp sensor only work with the explorer console? I just checked with a relative who works for Ford and he checked for the ambient temp sensor and they have been discontinued, with no upgraded part. I hope I am on the correct path. Any input is appreciated.

I agree with the two wires, but where should the second wire (DB/W) from the Explorer temp sensor connect to the console? According to this diagram, The 94 and 95 Broncos with the C299 connector (which is what I have) only had one wire running to the console (DB/Y) on the diagram. The other wire (LB/Or) was spliced to a ground. My thought is as long as the Explorer temp sensor will work, I should be able to ground the second wire (which is DB/W from the Explorer temp sensor), and keep with the original wiring diagram. If not, where do I run the second wire into the console?

Thought this was the best place to put this. I installed a Bronco Overhead console using an explorer wiring harness into a 96 XLT. Now I already had the temp sensor and the harness plug behind the e-brake bracket.

If you look at the two diagrams for a 96 Bronco and a 96 Explorer, you'll notice that the plugs are exactly the same and are pinned the same (including in the same order), there are just a few wire colors that don't cross between the two. After mounting the console, I plugged the end of the explorer harness into the Bronco OHC and ran the harness over to the A-pillar.

Splice the following wires together:

Explorer-----------Bronco-------------Function
Black------------->Black------------->Ground
Gray/yellow------->White/purple------>Power(hot in run)
Gray/black-------->Gray/black ------->VSS
Lt Green/orange--->Lt Green/yellow--->Battery Saver
Black/Lt blue------>Black/Lt blue------>Courtesy Lamps
Red/black--------->Lt Blue/red-------->Instrument Illumination
Dk Blue/yellow----->Dk Blue/yellow---->Temp Sensor Feed
Dk Blue/white------>Lt Blue/orange---->Temp Sensor Return
The last two wires are the one you need.

I know this is the Explorer Overhead Console (OHC) thread, but it seems like it's become more generally the OHC thread, sooooo....

The install of my Bronco OHC (Tan) is now complete. Thanks to a couple members on here not only for their info. on this subject, but also having pieces I needed. With a little patience and a little luck and final purchase from Steve83 I was able to put a complete factory setup together for $106 that includes:

Overhead console
Metal backer
Auto dim rearview mirror
Bronco temp sensor
OHC wiring harness for 94-95 eddie bauer bronco

So this was plug and play for me, all OEM, and works perfectly, I did the VAR set to 5 for my area, no need to calibrate, and the temp sensor is accurate as well. All lights work. Some pics:

Here I was testing the OHC with power before going further and removing the headliner:

Not sure what those 2 white spots are, but they are camera related, the liner is in perfect condition:

I have several more pics showing more detail of stuff like the C299 94-95 plug, fishing the harness down, important Steve83 wiring diagrams, etc. here:

Looks good....

Speaking of bronco OHC's in the explorer OHC thread... Has anyone figured out what that net is for? I thought it'd be a good place to put the remote for my headunit, but after 30 seconds it fell out... Now I keep it where the garage door opener from 15 year ago is supposed to go :D

yea, the net at the back is kinda lame. I plan to put my sunglasses in there, but they don't fit real well. better than on the dash though. I just was thinking that my little cheapy cell phone can go there as well.

I even have my garage door opener up in it's space now. I am loving this console. The opener has been over my head on the visor for 15 yrs. I can also say that the computer unit is pretty quick in realizing direction/compass change as you drive.

That harness made it way easier, it was worth the money. Plus it had the little push clips and my truck already had the little holes up the pillar, so it's all in place just like it came from the factory.

Nice Bronco and excellent install. Looks great

bringing this old one back again. But with a twist. I was at pick and pull yesterday, and remembered this thread. But we dont have any fords with the OHC in them, so I opted for, eww i know, a Dodge. I removed the computer unit from the console, as well as the controller and wire harness. Temp sensor and some other sensor that was near the temp, too.
It's out of a '92 or so, caravan.
Now the interesting part.
These consoles have, in conjunction with compass and temp, a miles per gallon gauge, avarage MPG, and a few other things of the like. We one a car with this exact console, and if I'm not mistaken, it is OBD1. Any chance the MPG calculations are done in the console? there are 11 wires into the computer. Two for power, two for temp, I believe one for illumination, and 6 other miscellanious wires.
If this all works out it's going into my center floor console. ( I know I'll have to mess with the compass, for it will be mounted in an inverse angle

You may want to look at some dodge wiring diagrams but the MPG portions may be calculated from something as easy as a VSS signal and RPM signal.

Start a new thread when you figure it out. I'd love to have something like that.

Well, we have one of these cars, and for some reason, a rather detailed service manual for it. So in that manual was also the wiring diagrams. I'm still trying to figure the damn thing out. As of now, I know I have the Temp sensor wires, and a ground wire. There is one from the PCM, seat belt warning system, vanity mirrors, data link connector, and body computer. still not positive where the power comes from. But we'll see...

And yes, definitely. It will probaby end up being a sub-write-up under my center console build, containing its own fuse and relay box, switches up the ying yang, subwoofer, CB, and who knows what else :rockon
