hey there, i got a 96 5.0 xl and my engine is getting near the 300k mark, wanted to get a few ideas on what steps i can take to resolve this. i considered rebuilding it because i am NOT getting rid of my truck, but rebuilds could be more expensive depending on the outlets ive found. is there any ideas on a swap i could do? i really want to keep it at least close to stock, more power wouldnt kill me. friends have told me to throw an Ls in the bay and i reaaaally dont want a chevy engine in it. thought about a newer gen ford 5.0 but i wouldnt know where to start. pepper some ideas in for me, thanks!

Are you looking for a swap that's cheaper than just rebuilding your 5.0? I don't think that's possible. Usually just rebuilding what you have is the cheapest option other than putting in another of the same engine, but from the wrecking yard or donor vehicle, etc.

Are you doing the swap yourself?

for simplicity do a 5.0 build. Good heads, intake manifold (Holley systemax) and cam. Doing a ls swap will yield great power but it and a coyote swap will be some major money. That’s why I didn’t do a ls3 swap in mine. I have about $6000 going in my rebuilt 351w. You have a maf motor so you can have the tune done. Expect $500-1000 for that depending on what major city you’re buy. Finding someone who specializes in old fords is getting harder.

if you’re paying a shop to do a ls swap expect to pay $15k or more. If you’re doing it the swap would be a lot cheaper. Autofab makes mounts for the swap. You’d need a stand alone compute for it.

Any non-factory, non-80/90s ford engine is gonna be 10k by the time you are done. Then say you have 450 hp, your transmission wont hold up long.

Best bet is a simple rebuild. If you want more power, slap on new heads, cam, intake, and bump the compression up.

Stay away from the stroker kits if you want the utmost reliability.

Some 165/175 cfm heads, comp 35-512-8 cam, and the holley systemax intake, with a good exhaust, will get you to 300 hp and 400 ft/lbs. But you will need the computer tuned and injectors swapped with 30lb units.

Since I want a final drive ratio of at least 150:1; I might go this route because ultra low drive ratios don't need high HP/torque.

If I can get 400ft/lbs of torque from a rebuild; I'll be a happy camper. 😁

I'm not a big fan of chevys in Fords or Fords in Chevys either. Next time I need to get a new 302 engine I'm not going jaspers lol. I'm doing either a 306 or 331 stroker build with the comp 35-512-8 cam and my 165 AFR heads. Then port match the heads, intake, and exhaust.

Yeah, I agree, but power isnt the only focus, now in a nice lightwieght sports car, yes power is good, but in a big heavy truck like a Bronco, it doesn't make much difference, cuz of the big heavy truck part of the equasion... the 5.3L would be fine with me.

This come from having owned Tahoe's and Escalade's one after the other & while the Escalade at 385hp 6.0L was a tiny bit more powerful than the 300hp 5.3L Tahoe, it was still a big, heavy, & slow SUV, but mostly, it was just worse on gas... that slight bit of extra power off the line wasn't worth the hit in fuel economy the rest of the time to me.

@Rob_64-365 A cam and good tune, mild exhaust and the 6.0 really starts to shine. 5.3 is solid engine too... the LS in general is good engine (should be as they borrowed some the 351W architecture)

Im not big on putting non-ford stuff in broncos, but if it keeps em on the road then its all good. I look at it as you thought so highly of the Bronco that you wanted to swap it the Chevy power, vs just starting with a Blazer. Same with FOX mustangs, they work SO WELL that it makes sense to re-power them. In both examples you don't (usually) see Ford swapped Blazers or camaro's (especially the ones from FOX era). Seems to only equal opportunity swapper is a Cummins.

I agree with most things said so far, however my next project truck will be gen 2 Coyote with a 6r80 behind it. Likely this will be a '79 F-250

I'm guessing it would be completely hopless, entire vehicle relies on leftover engine technoloy without the 302/351 then. Probably best to keep it simple with just saying chevorlet ... just joking

Is the engine running poorly enough to necessitate a rebuild or engine swap? I understand doing it just to do it due to the mileage, but just curious.

If you want some inspiration, here's my thread on rebuilding my own 351. 302 is basically the same thing. It can be a fun project if this isn't your daily driver and have time to do it.
